O'BriensBridge Riverside Walk , O'Briensbridge, County Clare
About the Business
Welcome to O'Briensbridge Riverside Walk, located in the picturesque County Clare, Ireland. Situated on the eastern verge of the county, our establishment offers a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers.
Nestled on the banks of the majestic River Shannon, Ireland's longest river, our park and point of interest provide a serene and tranquil setting. The village of O'Briensbridge takes its name from the iconic bridge that spans the Shannon, connecting it to the neighboring village of Montpelier in County Limerick.
The area downstream from O'Briensbridge is renowned for its angling and watersports opportunities, attracting visitors from near and far. For those interested in the engineering marvels of Ireland, a visit to Parteen is a must. Here, the flow of the Shannon is diverted into the Shannon Headrace, a man-made canal that powers a hydroelectric station at Ardnacrusha.
The Errinagh Canal, originally built for navigation purposes, now serves as a recreational amenity, offering fishing and watersports activities. The loop trail follows the riverbank and towpaths from O'Briensbridge to Clonlara, providing a scenic and enjoyable journey through the region's history.
To embark on this adventure, start from the riverside car park and follow the pathway along the River Shannon. As you walk, you'll notice the red arrows on the waymarkers, guiding your way. Alongside these markers, you'll also find blue arrows for the shorter Errinagh Bridge Loop and yellow arrows for the Lough Derg Way, a long-distance walking route from Limerick City to Killaloe.
The trail takes you through a beautiful natural woodland area, once the old towpath. After 1km, the route veers right as you join the Errinagh Canal. Follow the canalbank until you reach Errinagh Bridge. Pass under the bridge, climb the embankment, and turn left following the red and yellow arrows. At this point, the blue loop diverges, making its way back to O'Briensbridge.
Continue along the towpath and sandy roadways, passing a canal lock along the way. Eventually, you'll join a tarred road where you'll turn right. After a short distance, you'll enter Clonlara Village, where you'll turn right onto another roadway.
Follow this roadway onto the embankment of the Shannon Headrace, enjoying the stunning views for 5km. Along this stretch, you'll also pick up the blue loop trail. Exit the embankment via a stile at the end of the forestry and continue straight on the roadway.
After 300m, re-enter the village, turning right as you join the tarred road. Follow this road through the village, savoring the charming atmosphere, and enjoy the 200m back to the trailhead.

"Beautiful area. Kids got to play in the playground, which was spotless while we went to have a look at the bridge, and then went up to the lovely memorial garden and abit beyond. Plenty of benches. Very clean, no dog poo thank god. And then into the lovely outdoor seating area of the local cafe. Fantastic coffee. Lovely stop off."
"Amazing walk, playground was safe and roomy. The walk was relaxing and would highly recommend it. Fairy garden was quant and met the resident mouse. Maybe it wasn't a mouse a fairy perhaps?"
"Lovely little village on the eastern side of Co.Clare. Afew trails here to choose from. Decided on the 5k given the dark clouds above. Beautiful scenic route along the river Shannon that takes you down to the Parteen Weir Hydron dam that loops around. Easy parking next to the playground. Lovely walk for the kids and dog. Some open spots leading into the river so attentiveness is highly recommended. Would also suggest wearing old shoes or wellies as the ground is soft in places."
"Great walk here by the river. Lovely views. Fresh air. Interesting terrain and environment. Good way to exercise."
"Wanted to do the walk as seen it advertised. But not sure if there was parking for our motorhome. The small carpark beside the playground wasn't busy and we were able to park with our overhang on the grass. Asked some local mothers if it was ok and they thought so. Anyway we completed the 12km loop walk in 2hrs 10 mins. We walked it clockwise so the first half was along the river to Cloonlara which was pretty but the second half was on a dike beside the canal which I found boring but had spectacular views of the hills. The first half is a single dirt track which is overgrown in places with plenty of tree shade. The second half on the dike is grass and sheep droppings with no shade. Overall it's a lovely walk and the next time we will do the 17km loop. Can it be done on a bike? The single track beside the river would be difficult if it was busy as there is not much or no room to step aside in some places. The track on the dike would be grand for a bike."
