About the Business
Welcome to Petra Hoggarth Clinical Psychologist, located at 20 Gamblins Road in Christchurch, New Zealand. As a clinical psychologist, I specialize in providing psychotherapeutic treatment for a variety of mental health concerns, including anxiety disorders, depression, adjustment to life circumstances, relationship problems, adult ADHD assessment, and therapy for adult ADHD.
I offer both in-person sessions and nationwide consultations via Zoom, allowing individuals from all over the country to access my services. My therapeutic approach is grounded in evidence-based practices, specifically Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which have been proven effective in helping individuals overcome their challenges and improve their well-being.
For those interested in therapy, I currently have availability for new clients, with appointments starting as soon as 1-2 weeks from now. Self-referrals are welcome, and you can reach out to me via email to schedule a session. It's important to note that I am not ACC registered.
Please check back on this website in mid-January 2024 at 8am for the next round of appointment bookings. While I don't maintain a waiting or cancellation list, I do not disclose the specific day when bookings will be advertised.
If you are seeking assessments for adult ADHD, I can provide you with a list of psychologists and psychiatrists who advertise their expertise in this area. Simply email me for more information.
With a background in clinical psychology and training from the University of Canterbury, where I graduated in 2012, I bring nine years of experience working in a public health interdisciplinary team at the Older Persons Mental Health Service. During this time, I have worked with individuals across the mental health spectrum, from outpatient care to day clinic patients and those requiring inpatient treatment. I have extensive experience in supporting individuals with chronic and recurring mental health issues, as well as those experiencing their first episode of mental unwellness.
Additionally, I have expertise in conducting neuropsychological assessments, which provide insights into how brain function is impacted by various internal and external factors. While I do not offer neuropsychological assessments privately, my knowledge in this area allows me to better understand and address the effects of neurodevelopmental differences, degenerative brain diseases, brain injuries, and other factors on mental health.
In my private practice, I work with individuals dealing with a wide range of mental health, neurodevelopmental, and life problems. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, or navigating challenging life circumstances, I am here to provide support and guidance. Through Zoom consultations, I can extend my services to clients nationwide.
Apart from my clinical work, I completed a PhD in psychology in 2011, focusing on older adults and their ability to drive, particularly in cognitively healthy individuals and those with cognitive impairment, including dementia.
As a registered clinical psychologist, I am a proud member of the New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists, adhering to their high standards of professional practice.
Outside of work, I reside in Christchurch with my husband, who is also a clinical psychologist, and our two young children. In my limited spare time, I enjoy activities such as walking on the hill, listening to podcasts, indulging in reading, and finding solace in moments of silence.
Please note that I do not provide emergency help services. If you are in Canterbury, the Crisis Resolution service through the Canterbury District Health Board is available for immediate assistance. The government-sponsored Need to Talk service can be accessed by calling or texting 1737 or 0800 1737 1737.
Thank you for considering Petra Hoggarth Clinical Psychologist for your mental health needs. I look forward to supporting you on your journey towards improved well-being.

Reviews
"She’s amazing! Saved my life, not exaggerating."
"Very talented and kind psychologist with a clear understanding of ADHD - especially in children and women. She has gone beyond many others, by looking into the way medications work for ADHD, their effectiveness, and how each medication dose works compared with others."
"I've been seeing Petra for a couple of months and highly recommend her!"
