Welcome to the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Otago in Christchurch, New Zealand! Established in 1972, our department has been at the forefront of teaching, research, and professional training for Paediatrics and Child Health in New Zealand.

At our institution, we offer a comprehensive teaching program that caters to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Our undergraduate program covers various aspects of Paediatrics and Child Health, including Neonatology, Paediatric Surgery, and sub-speciality areas such as Neurology and Respiratory. For those looking to further their education, we provide postgraduate degrees such as the BMedSci, MMedSci, MD, and PhD in Paediatrics and Child Health.

Our academic staff are actively involved in research and have a wide range of interests. We have a long-standing focus on paediatric urology, community child health, SIDS, and neonatal research. In addition, we have ongoing research activities in respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, nutrition, neonatal medicine, diabetes and endocrinology, infectious diseases, and childhood cancer. We collaborate closely with other research groups and departments, such as the Centre for Free Radical Research, to enhance our research capabilities.

As integral members of specialist Paediatric clinical services at Christchurch Hospital and Christchurch Women's Hospital, our academic staff provide high-quality care to patients. Christchurch Hospital offers secondary referral General Paediatric services, while also serving as the base for numerous paediatric subspecialty services. These include Renal and Endocrine medicine, Respiratory medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Neurology, Paediatric Surgery, and Paediatric Haematology and Oncology. We are proud to offer tertiary services not only to our region but also to the rest of the South Island.
