About the Business
Welcome to Southern Cross Christchurch Hospital, the largest hospital within our national network. Located on Bealey Avenue in Christchurch, our establishment is a prominent health institution and a point of interest in the area.
Since 1979, Southern Cross has owned and operated this centrally situated hospital campus, which includes one of the biggest and most advanced private surgical hospitals in the South Island. Over the years, our Christchurch hospital has undergone significant upgrades and additions, resulting in state-of-the-art facilities that cater to around 9,500 patients annually.
Our hospital is equipped with digital operating theatres, including an advanced 'hybrid' operating room and systems for robotically-assisted surgery. We also utilize cutting-edge digital scanning technologies and have consulting facilities on-site. Additionally, our purpose-built endoscopy centre, the Southern Endoscopy Centre, is one of the largest in New Zealand.
For patients staying overnight, we offer comfortable rooms with ensuite bathrooms, television, telephone, and radio. Our dedicated nursing team is committed to providing high-quality care and ensuring your comfort throughout your stay. We also provide quality meals, with special dietary needs catered for upon request.
Day-stay patients can enjoy comfortable lounges and are provided with light refreshments following their surgery. We strive to make your experience as pleasant as possible.
Visitors are welcome at our hospital, and visitor meals can be arranged for a reasonable charge. Visitor parking is available, but please be aware that Covid-19 precautions may impact visitation. We recommend reviewing our Covid-19 page before planning your visit.
At our Christchurch campus, we have ten operating theatres, including hi-tech digital theatres and the da Vinci® system for robotically-assisted surgery. Independent credentialled practitioners have access to advanced scanning and imaging technologies, as well as consulting centres located on-site. Southern Cross Rehabilitation also operates on our hospital campus, providing additional facilities and services.
Specialist groups benefit from purpose-built consulting centres and advanced technologies available within our hospital campus. These include a purpose-built endoscopy centre and modern imaging facilities.
If you have any general health enquiries, questions, or concerns, please direct them to your admitting specialist, GP, or local accident & emergency centre.
For your convenience, we provide a Southern Cross patient Admission Pack that you will receive from your surgeon prior to your hospital procedure. These forms are essential for our healthcare teams to plan for your care. They cover personal details, health history, special needs, and payment. Please complete all sections so that we can meet your needs effectively.
After reviewing your forms, we may contact you for additional information or request that you visit us for a pre-admission consultation. Please remember to bring your 'Agreement to Treatment Form' provided by your specialist when you come to the hospital.
If you prefer, you can complete your Patient Admission and Patient Health Questionnaire forms online. This will send your details directly to the hospital, and you will also have the option to request a copy for your own reference. We recommend using a desktop computer or tablet for the best user experience.
If you are not a New Zealand resident, please complete the 'Acknowledgement Form: Non NZ Resident' (PDF).
To ensure your safety, we encourage you to read our Preventing Infection After Surgery brochure (PDF) and watch the Staying Safe Before and After Surgery video.
Once completed, patient forms can be scanned or photographed legibly and emailed to the hospital or sent by post. If you choose to mail the forms, please allow an additional 1-2 weeks for delivery.
Please be aware that admission to the hospital for treatment puts you at a high risk of blood clots. If you have any concerns or factors that may increase your risk, please discuss them with your GP or treating medical specialist.
Thank you for choosing Southern Cross Christchurch Hospital. We are dedicated to providing exceptional care and ensuring your well-being throughout your time with us.

"Fantastic service. The nurses and doctors are friendly that I met. Made me feel comfortable and relaxed."
"Not the first time I've been in here but as previously even though it was for an operation all the staff right through from reception to orderlies, nurses, doctors and anaesthetists all made the experience stress free and even, although it might be a strange thing to say, enjoyable. You all do an amazing job. Also a big shout out to the cleaners and sorry if I've forgotten anyone. Thanks so much. Cheers, Peter."
"I had a surgery and stayed for one night at Southern Cross. Everyone was very kind and helpful. I felt very well cared for. A big thanks to everyone involved in my care."
"I cannot praise the hard working nurses and assistants enough!!! I was kept well informed and was well taken care of during my short stay. I had a lovely room to myself, air-conditioned which is a bonus when the weather is sizzling outside. The food was to a high standard. The rooms all have sky (I didn't watch but great if you are there for longer for sure!). I don't really want to come back but so glad I am lucky enough to be able to use Southern Cross Hospital."
