Swimming at Marrinawi Cove Barangaroo, New South Wales 2000
About the Business
Welcome to Swimming at Marrinawi Cove, a hidden gem located at the northern end of Barangaroo Reserve in New South Wales, City of Sydney. This establishment is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the beauty of Australia's famous harbour waters.
Marrinawi Cove spans an impressive 700 square metres and offers a picturesque setting with its native flora and sculpted sandstone lining the shore. It is a truly stunning location that showcases the natural beauty of the area.
In January 2023, the NSW Government introduced a swimming enclosure at Marrinawi Cove, aiming to revive swimming in Sydney's iconic harbour waters. This enclosure features safety netting to enclose the swimming area, along with railings, signage, and a shower for visitors' convenience and safety.
While the Cove provides a unique swimming experience, it is essential to note that it is a natural environment with slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as oysters, algae, and other marine life present. We strongly encourage swimmers to exercise caution at all times, follow safety signage, and wear suitable footwear to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Adjacent to the Cove, you will find the Former Sewerage Pump House, a small brown building that offers toilet facilities and showers for your convenience.
To ensure the safety and well-being of our visitors, we have conducted periodic water quality testing before opening the enclosure, and ongoing monitoring will continue to ensure a safe swimming environment. The NSW Government is also exploring long-term water quality monitoring systems for the future.
Please note that unlike larger swimming locations, Marrinawi Cove does not have lifeguards on duty. Visitors swim at their own risk. However, the wider area is monitored by the Rangers team at Barangaroo to provide management and response in case of any incidents.
You may be wondering about the presence of sharks and other predators. Rest assured, the design of this location includes a shark net, which is anchored to the floor of the Cove and fully encloses the swimming area. This ensures your safety while enjoying the waters.
To maintain the cleanliness of the Cove, scheduled cleaning will take place periodically to minimize the growth of oysters, algae, and other marine life. Please check the closure dates for cleaning, which may have a contingency of the day before and after, depending on weather conditions.
While visiting Barangaroo, we kindly request that you keep your dogs on a leash at all times to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors.
Lastly, we would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the First Peoples and Traditional Custodians of this land. We honor their Elders, both past and present.
Come and experience the tranquility and beauty of Swimming at Marrinawi Cove. Dive into the crystal-clear waters and embrace the natural wonders of this remarkable location.

"Really nice spot to have a dip or just chill in the shade if you can get some, it gets very busy there on a nice day tho, the rocks are slippery and several people slipped while i was there, the kids have a high spot they can jump off in to relatively deep water, come prepared tho as no shops nearby."
"Great little swimming area right in the heart of the city! Be careful of slippery rocks and sharp oysters though!"
"Seriously impressed. I knew there was a shower here to wash off after a swim. However, there are also bathrooms here to use. The rocks are a bit slippery when getting in and out of the water... and yes, there is some seaweed. At least there is a shark net so you feel safe swimming here."
"Great swimming location with shark net, public shower and large stand stone rocks to sit on. Water was warm with very gentle waves. There is also a jetty you can jump off from into the water"
"Such a unique and iconic location to have a rock pool within Sydney harbour and so close to the CBD and harbor bridge. Every Australian and visitor needs to visit and swim here. Toilets are within 30m and plenty of space for picnics too."
