About the Business
Welcome to Malabar Ocean Pool, located near Malabar Beach in Long Bay, Australia. Situated directly below Randwick Golf Club, our establishment offers spectacular views over Long Bay and the Randwick Rifle Range. The pool features an access ramp to the pool deck for convenient entry.
At Malabar Ocean Pool, we pride ourselves on our commitment to maintaining a clean and chemical-free environment. Our ocean pools are regularly inspected by Council staff and undergo steam cleaning when necessary. This ensures that our visitors can enjoy a pristine swimming experience.
Please note that our pool is scheduled for cleaning every week, with the majority of cleanings taking place on Thursdays. However, please be aware that this schedule is subject to change at short notice due to tidal and weather conditions affecting pool access and cleanliness.
The cleanliness of the water and the presence of algae on the steps, walls, and floor can vary depending on weather conditions and tidal wash. Occasionally, seaweed and other materials may be washed into the pool. Additionally, the water inlets are dependent on tidal conditions, and the pumps are programmed to operate during high tide when conditions allow.
We strive to remove weed from the pool whenever possible, in accordance with tidal and weather conditions. However, please be aware that seagrass cannot be removed due to NSW DPI legislation that protects mangroves, seagrasses, and seaweeds on public water land and foreshores.
The history of Malabar Ocean Pool dates back to the 1890s when a rock pool was formed with existing boulders on the south side of Long Bay. By 1909, public sea bathing was popular and free at this location, coinciding with the opening of Malabar Public School and the erection of the Cromwell Park Jubilee Fountain.
Unfortunately, due to increasing pollution from the Malabar sewerage outfall, the pool and the beach were declared off-limits to swimmers. Despite resident protests, the Water Board paid little attention to the poor quality of the water. However, following the opening of the deep ocean outfall for sewage in 1990, the water at Malabar Beach became clear and clean once again, making it suitable for swimming. Thanks to funding from Randwick City Council, Sydney Water, and the NSW Department of Water Conservation, the ocean pool was upgraded and reopened for swimming carnivals in March 1997.
In addition to providing a safe and enjoyable swimming experience, we also offer a directory of services and groups to help you stay safe in the water. We are proud to acknowledge and pay respects to the Bidjigal and Gadigal Clans, who traditionally occupied this area of the Sydney Coast, and honor Elders both past and present.
Come and experience the beauty and serenity of Malabar Ocean Pool. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor to Australia, our establishment is sure to provide you with a memorable swimming experience surrounded by breathtaking views.

"45 yrs ago i left Sydney (1979) after growing up here. Then pool and beach was closed. Today... blown away by the transformation. Such a beautyful area now."
"Great place for a early morning swim, and never too busy!"
"My latest fav place. A beach and a rock pool and there is a even hiking trek! Do Malabar headlands hiking and jump into the water. That is just perfect!"
"Malabar Ocean Pool is nestled away from the main beach and quieter than other city beaches ocean pools. It’s a decent sized pool perfect for laps or cooling off in warmer weather. As normal with ocean pools, there is moss build up so can get slippery- be careful! Parking available in the street and it’s a short flight of stairs down to the pool"
"Overlooking Long Bay and the Randwick Rifle Range on its opposite shore, this asymmetrical rockpool has a long history in various forms, from a small swimming hole in the late 19th Century to a 150 metre monster through much of the 20th, before ending up as this 33 metre version in 1997. There’s no facilities like change rooms or toilets at Malabar Ocean Pool, but it does have everything else: ramps and handrails, outdoor showers, benches to sit on and even hooks to hang your stuff on set into the surrounding rocks. There’s plenty of free parking on the street and it has a nice chilled and casual mainly locals vibe. There’s great fun to be had at the far corner as waves crash over it into the pool and it’s full of marine life for budding snorkelers. At 1.9 metres deep it makes for a good swimming experience. This was our second visit in two years and there’ll probably be a third in the future."
