The National Famine Museum, located within the magnificent Strokestown Park estate in Roscommon, Ireland, serves as a poignant reminder of one of the darkest times in Ireland's history. The museum tells the story of the victims of the famine, their suffering, and their struggle for survival through a range of exhibitions, displays, and interactive experiences.
At the heart of the museum is the restored Strokestown Park House, which provides a glimpse into the lives of the Irish landed gentry during the 19th century. The museum's permanent exhibition, "The Way It Was," offers immersive displays that depict the lives of those who lived and died during the famine. Through powerful images, artifacts, and first-hand accounts, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the human toll of the famine.
Another highlight of the museum is the "Migration Stories" exhibit, which explores the impact of the famine on Irish emigration to North America. Visitors can follow the journeys of Irish emigrants through interactive exhibits that connect personal stories to broader historical trends.

Reviews
"Both moving and educational. A superb presentation of the effect of famine on the local estate. Great audio visual tour of the museum was available. Make sure you also take a tour of the "Big House" to understand the massive contrast between the life of the landowners and the workers on his estate."
"My husband and I visited the famine museum and really enjoyed the experience. The new museum is presented in a way which makes the story very interesting. There is a lovely café and a small shop. There is a car park. Highly recommended."
"The Park's House has been opened after an extensive refurbishment and it's spectacular. The fairy woodland walk and Victorian Gardens are a treat too. The House now also boasts a cafe and gift shop with the entrance akin to that of a five star hotel. The staff are courteous, knowledgeable and extremely accommodating for families. Can't wait to go back again."
"We visited the famine museum and the grounds. The museum is informative and well worth a visit. The audio guides are useful and included in the admission price. (I'd say the museum is not really suitable for young children - there are darkened rooms and lots of detail to read or listen to.) Outside, the gardens have the potential to be lovely, but at present some parts are very overgrown and filled with weeds."
