Welcome to Canvas Bag Drama School, located at 36 Merivale Lane in Christchurch, New Zealand. As an establishment and point of interest, we are dedicated to providing a unique and immersive learning experience in the world of drama and storytelling.

At Canvas Bag Drama School, we believe in the power of stories. From traditional fables to modern day tales, we encourage our students to imagine themselves inside these stories, taking on the roles of anyone or anything they can dream of, from mermaids to ogres.

Our classes offer a structured yet fun-filled social environment, where improvisation and role-play are extensively used to develop positive self-worth and the ability to confidently express thoughts and feelings. Through these activities, our students not only learn valuable acting skills, but also cultivate a sense of enthusiasm and initiative.

One of the highlights of our program is the opportunity for students to create their own stories and scripts, using the characters they have explored. From genies inside lamps to erupting volcanoes, the possibilities are endless. We provide costumes, props, and musical instruments as tools for experimentation and creativity.

Each year, our dedicated tutors write plays based on ideas generated by the students in class. These original scripts are then rehearsed and performed to a public audience, allowing our students to showcase their talent and hard work.

Our main campus is located in Merivale, Christchurch, New Zealand, on the grounds of Rangi Ruru School. We also have satellite campuses in South Brighton and Halswell, offering convenient access to our classes.

Canvas Bag Drama School, formerly known as Mozarts Drama School, was established in 1995 by educator and writer Felicity Williams. Our mission has always been to provide children and young people with a high-quality after-school activity that fosters inquiry, creativity, imagination, and, of course, fun!

In 2016, we rebranded as Canvas Bag Drama, reflecting our commitment to nurturing the full spectrum of performing arts. Our classes are held in The Theatre, located on the grounds of Rangi Ruru High School in Merivale, Christchurch.

Throughout our 25-year history, we have witnessed the transformative impact of our classes on hundreds of children and teenagers. Whether they pursue a career in the arts or simply gain valuable life skills, our students benefit from our engaging and comprehensive curriculum.

Our term-based approach focuses on different aspects of drama throughout the year. Term 1 emphasizes voice and movement techniques, scene study, and improvisation. Term 2 delves into storytelling, characterisation, and the creation of an original script for our public performances in September. Term 3 offers Canvas Bag Theatre, a rigorous rehearsal and performance curriculum. Finally, in Term 4, we explore television and media, further developing presentation and storytelling skills, with a special focus on comedy and absurdist theatre.
