"Your car is packed, your mates have piled in in or you’ve buckled the kids into their seats and you’re off down the South Gippy freeway to explore all the amazing delights of the Gippsland region or the picturesque beaches spanning from Phillip Island to Wilson Promontory.... finally out of the city the relaxation sets in! You can not, hand on heart truly, experience this region without stopping just south of Koo Wee Rup at the Observation Tower and indulging your tastebuds in “fresh Hot Jam Donuts”. The team that work this local gem icon of deliciousness make your order fresh as quickly as it rolls off you tongue. I mean THAT fresh that you see them flipping them in the sugar after coming out hot and fluffy. As you juggle your first hot donuty cloud of pleasure, of course coating your fingers in the sugar, dig in knowing that the sheer volume and years of craft put into this van, ensures there’s barely ever a burnt jam situation on your tongue. No matter who’s working, how many impatient hipsters might be standing behind you, the staff in this long time family owned and operated business will greet you with a smile, a country welcoming attitude and probably some helpful advice on where you’re headed and what to see on the way. Did I mention Dim Sims? Fried or steamed of course, soy sauce delivered the traditional way, poured from the bottle. Hot dog more your appetite? Would you like cheese? How about onion? Condiments on offer, traditional long bun and a great appetite filler. Whilst I visited - I witnessed a first for me. Dim sims IN A HOT DOG LONG BUN! Life changed, carbs loaded and a holiday or weekender kicked off just the right way. Testament to the changing times and a nod to local farmers there is an abundance of fresh fruit and veggies, seasonal of course and fresh from the local farmers themselves. Eat too many donuts whilst visiting, walk up the observation tower, a great way to burn a few cals. With some seating surrounding in this tiny park stop area and the lush green grass on offer to this is the perfect stop if you’re wanting to avoid the lines, queues and potential traffic nightmares of some of the more “corporately owned” stops the track. My only advice, stop back in on the way home. Nothing says you’ve had a darn good jaunt down the South Gippy Freeway than having to brush the sugar off yourself after your arrive back home!"
