About the Business
Welcome to Box Hill Hospital Emergency Department, located at Arnold Street in Box Hill, Australia. As part of Eastern Health, we provide 24/7 emergency services to the community. On average, we treat over 450 patients each day, with even higher numbers on weekends and holidays.
For after-hours care, residents of eastern and northeastern Melbourne can benefit from the My Emergency Dr app, which offers free telehealth consultations. This convenient service is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
When you arrive at our Emergency Department, a highly-skilled triage nurse will assess your condition to determine its urgency. They have specialized training to prioritize patients and ensure those in critical condition are seen immediately. If your condition is assessed as less urgent, you may be asked to wait until a clinician is available.
We understand the importance of providing a child-friendly environment, and our emergency departments have purpose-built waiting and treatment areas for children. Just like adult patients, children are also triaged upon arrival.
The waiting time can vary depending on the seriousness of your condition, your triage category, and the department's busyness. During normal activity, there may be a wait for less urgent cases, and during peak times, the wait can exceed four hours. Please communicate with our staff if your condition changes or if you need to leave the department.
At Eastern Health, we are committed to cultural and language responsiveness, ensuring that our services meet the diverse needs of the communities we serve. We acknowledge and respect the Traditional Owners of the land on which we operate and strive for equality in health status between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-indigenous Australians.
As a child safe organization, we prioritize the well-being and cultural safety of all children, including Aboriginal children and those with disabilities. Our goal is to provide inclusive healthcare services to everyone.

"I went there last night as I was in severe pain and bleeding heavily. The front desk was abandoned and it took me 20 minutes just to triage nurse. I waited hours and saw nobody. There were 45 people in the waiting room. Instead of employing more nurses, the hospital has employed two women to go around people and interrogate them about them about their symptoms and tell them to go home. It’s absolutely disgraceful what our hospital systems have become. I would only go there again in the most dire of circumstances. I decided to leave without treatment. I think they’d let you die on the very dirty floor. I’ve never been treated so poorly."
"The way this hospital treats injured people is pathetic. Nurse named Matt that has glasses and wears a Hawaiian shirt in particular. A young woman who was involved in a horrific life threatening and mentally traumatic car crash, suffered muscle and ligament damage near her spine and chest. Her care was treated in the most inhumane way, rudely discriminated and even kicked out of her private room. She was then told to go sit back in the waiting room and wait on a chair. Matt, who claimed to be the head of emergency then called security and kicked her out of the hospital for no other reason than calling out in pain for standard health and safety care and treatment including CT scans which they refused to do. We are all disgusted with the wrongful treatment, This matter will be taken further to assess by the head of the ‘Professional Misconduct act’ & Health And Safety Protocol “Unsatisfactory professional nurse conduct of a sufficiently serious nature to justify suspension or cancellation of the practitioner's registration” All footage was recorded of the incident via mobile phone as well as in-house security body cam footage that we will use in court. We have witnesses to testify and we will get justice Matt. I told you when I looked you in the eye that your wrongdoing will bring legal karma. An act of discriminating the wrong people who don’t take things like this lightly. A nurses job is to help people, yet the corrupt system has the world we live in as a reminder that majority of nurses are unconscious and not caring for people in need of proper care."
"The wait times outlined are simply false. I waited 5 hours to be seen, 8 hours for testing, and 12 hours from.when I entered for a medical opinion. And I was referred by my GP. Unless it's absolutely life threatening don't go"
"Zero stars is the right rating. I myself am a healthcare worker and never in my years of experience have l seen an ED in such a disorganised manner. Each patient had been waiting for 9+ hours. I myself am on my 11th Hour. No beds given for sleeping sick children, mothers in distress and asking nurses what they can do to help them. Patients including families, walking out of the ED due to no response from the nurses. The nurses themselves being very arrogant, Full of attitude and being extremely obnoxious to the patients. Being a healthcare worker, and having been on either side of the table, I understand that we’re understaffed, overworked and underpaid almost all the time. However there is a certain level of humanity when it comes to working with patients which is the very basics of nursing and medicine. Witnessed the nightshift Triage nurse rudely interview, a child who has brought in by the father due to Suicidal tendencies. The nurse was very loud and asked the child point blank “Do you still want to kill yourself?” in front of everyone in the most demoralising manner, and everyone was shocked. People with ruptured appendices, blocked kidney stones, are made to wait extreme hours. I hope no one ever goes to this ED ever again, and I hope with all these reviews Boxhill hospital can do something to save their own emergency department because nowhere is it an emergency department, rather a never ending waiting room, where patients treated like avoidable and discarded people."
"Last week my 7 years old daughter ran into very high fever (40 degrees) that will go down only with panadol/nurofen and then go up again. She was very lethargic and pale. We have taken her to a GP that immediately scripted antibiotics and gave us letter for a Hospital evaluation. On the letter was written sceptic child which suppose to be an emergency. GP doctor asked to take her to the hospital. When we arrived to the emergency department we were made to wait for 5 hours to see a doctor. My child was given panadol and forgotten. We decided promptly that my husband goes and gets the script filled and have given her the first dose right there. I am furious at how my child was treated or rather not treated at all. It is a sad sad situation both for patients and hospital staff seeing the healthcare crumbling."
