About the Business
Welcome to Te Auheke Track to Cascade Falls, located in the beautiful Lake Ōkataina Scenic Reserve in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. This establishment offers a unique and picturesque experience for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Te Auheke Track to Cascade Falls consists of a series of short walks that can easily be combined to create a 1-3 hour walking adventure. As you explore the track, you will be treated to stunning views of the twin volcanic crater lakes, Rotongata and Rotoatua, which formed thousands of years ago. These lakes are home to a diverse range of birdlife, including scaup and dabchick, providing a delightful opportunity for birdwatching.
For those looking for a longer walk, Te Auheke Track connects with the Anaha Track and the Kepa Track, allowing you to extend your journey and explore even more of the scenic reserve. However, it is important to note that some sections of the track have high drop-offs, so please stay behind barriers and keep to the designated path to ensure your safety, especially if you are visiting with children.
To reach Te Auheke Track to Cascade Falls, simply start opposite the side road to the Outdoor Education Centre on Lake Ōkataina Road. The track passes through old logging sites, adding a touch of history to your walk. The track finishes 1.2 km from the start, but you can choose to walk back along the road to complete a loop.
In addition to Te Auheke Track, there are other connecting tracks in the area, such as the Ngahopua Track and the Kepa Track. These can be combined with Te Auheke Track for a longer and more immersive hiking experience.
One of the highlights of Te Auheke Track is the breathtaking Cascade Falls. Standing at around 10 meters high, these falls cascade over and around rock formations, creating a picturesque spectacle. The falls get their name, Te Auheke, which means 'tumbling water', due to the mesmerizing way the water tumbles down. At night, the cliff face near the falls comes alive with thousands of glow worms, adding a touch of magic to your visit.
For those interested in the native flora of New Zealand, Te Auheke Track offers a nature trail lined with a variety of native trees, including rimu, pukatea, and tawa. Many of these trees are labeled, providing an informative and educational experience as you walk. Additionally, a fenced-off area along the track showcases the impact of introduced browsing animals, such as wallabies, on the native vegetation, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts.
To access Te Auheke Track to Cascade Falls, simply turn onto Lake Ōkataina Road from SH 30 (Whakatane/ Rotorua highway) at Ruato, which is approximately 22 km from Rotorua.

"The car park is at Okataina outdoor education and recreation trust, is a big parking area. To get to the start of Te Auheke walkway you follow the little fence up past the water tank and along the tree line until you come to the Te Auheke sign. Is an easy 20min walk (1way) in a covered walkway"
"Beautiful hike. Great falls. Very kid friendly. Started off across from the jungle gym and then wanders through lovely native bush to a small grotto where you will do over the falls. Be sure to stay away from the buildings or a taniwha may come out and growl you... Like if helpful"
