Mount Oxford Walking Tracks and Ryde Falls 125 Mountain Road, View Hill, Canterbury 7495
About the Business
Welcome to Mount Oxford Walking Tracks and Ryde Falls, located in the picturesque Oxford Forest Conservation Area in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. This establishment offers a unique and unforgettable experience for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
One of the main highlights of Mount Oxford Walking Tracks is the breathtaking Mt Oxford Summit. Capture stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape from the summit, and be sure to bring your camera to capture the beauty of this natural wonder. The summit offers a truly awe-inspiring experience that will leave you feeling connected to nature.
For those seeking a longer adventure, we recommend combining the tracks with the Ryde Falls Track for a loop walk starting from either Coopers Creek or View Hill car park. Cross Coopers Creek from the car park and follow the marked track to the bridge over the east branch of Coopers Creek. As you make your way through the tracks, you will gradually climb through scattered pockets of beech forest and then ascend more steeply through snow tussock. This diverse terrain adds an extra element of excitement to your journey.
To access the tracks, simply turn off SH72 (Inland Scenic Route) onto Woodside Road, approximately 2 km south of Oxford. Follow Woodside Road for 7 km, then turn into Mountain Road and continue until you reach Coopers Creek car park at the end. From View Hill car park, branch off Wharfedale Track about 20 minutes into your walk. Follow the ridge through the forest, eventually emerging onto tussock grassland as you head towards the majestic Mt Oxford summit.
If you are coming from Oxford, simply turn off SH72 (Inland Scenic Route) onto Woodstock Road, approximately 4 km south of the town. Follow Woodstock Road for 10 km, then turn into Ingrams Road, followed by Limeworks Road, which eventually becomes Perhams Road. Look out for the AA sign indicating the turn-off to the start of the Wharfedale Track, where the View Hill car park is located.
Please note that during periods of heavy rain, two fords on Perhams Road may become impassable and the road may be muddy. It is advisable to use a 4WD vehicle in such conditions.
As with any outdoor adventure, it is important to be aware of your surroundings. Wasp populations tend to be high from January to March, so we recommend wearing light-colored clothing and carrying antihistamine cream or tablets as a precaution.
Discover the beauty of Mount Oxford Walking Tracks and Ryde Falls, an institution that offers a truly immersive experience in the heart of New Zealand's stunning natural landscape. Whether you are an avid hiker or simply seeking a peaceful escape, this establishment promises to deliver an unforgettable journey through the wonders of nature.

"Stunning sights. Be aware the track to the left will take upwards of 9 hours whereas the one on the right will take around 5 - 6."
"Moderate level, some parts are steep, need to be physically fit to walk. There are some parking lots next to the entrance of trail. It takes about four hours to go and back. It’s not a good idea to walk after heavy rain, it’s quite muddy and not easy to walk."
"Beautiful hike to Ryde Falls. Picked a high winds day to do this some time ago and the track was pretty exposed despite the tree cover, was abit more intrepid than intended with trees occasionally falling around us near the start of the track and a sprained ankle. But a great adventure all the same. Highly recommend and dog friendly."
"The Mt Oxford walking track is 4 hours to the summit. Department of Conservation has listed this track as advanced. It also states that suitable footwear is required: "Tramping/hiking boots." Never got to the summit, as another party sprained their ankle on this steep and unforgiving rugged track. Plus there were very strong howling winds in exposed places, once you left the ridgeline of the beech forest. So proceeded to turn around. It is not about getting to the top but safely getting down. The mountain will be there another day to climb."
"Great hike to mount Oxford and Rydes fall. Around 7 hours loop from Coopers Creek car park (with plenty of stops for photos and lunch). The hike to the summit is pretty steep around 2h30 but the view up there is really nice. From the top is mainly down hill till the fall. Around 2 hours. And finally a good 2 hours to get back to the car park. Well marked and well maintained path. The fall is pretty nice too."
