Abberley Park Paddling Pool 37 Ranfurly Street, Saint Albans, Christchurch, Canterbury 8014
About the Business
Welcome to Abberley Park Paddling Pool, a hidden gem nestled in the suburbs of Christchurch, New Zealand. This charming establishment, located at 37 Ranfurly Street, is not only a favorite among local residents but also offers a delightful experience for visitors from far and wide.
Originally a private garden dating back to the 1860s, Abberley Park boasts a collection of mature trees that lend an air of tranquility to the surroundings. As you stroll through the park, you'll be captivated by the beauty of an attractive stream and a scented garden, both of which add to the park's allure.
One of the highlights of Abberley Park is the well-loved children's playground. Throughout the years, generations of children have enjoyed its facilities, including a block wall, multi-play structure, roundabout, see-saw, slides, and swings. The playground is divided into two areas, one on the East Lawn and another on the West Lawn, ensuring that there is plenty of space for everyone to play and have fun.
For those hot summer days, Abberley Park offers a delightful paddling pool where children can splash around and cool off. Open from mid-November to 31 March, this fenced pool provides a safe and enjoyable experience for little ones.
Abberley Park is not just a playground paradise; it also offers a serene environment for leisurely walks. Meandering pathways invite you to explore the park's hidden corners and discover its hidden treasures. Along the way, you'll find plenty of seating areas where you can relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
Please note that dogs must be kept on a leash throughout the park, except for the flat eastern lawn area where they can roam freely under effective control. To ensure the safety of children, dogs are not allowed within one meter of the playground equipment.
Steeped in history, Abberley Park has a fascinating past that adds to its charm. Originally built as a private homestead in the 1860s, it was later transformed into a public park and playground by the Council in 1939. Efforts were made to preserve the park's 19th-century character, resulting in the retention of the original trees, shrubs, and even a pavilion made from one of the homestead's rooms.
Abberley Park also holds a special place in the hearts of visually impaired individuals. In the 1950s, a garden for the blind was designed by Huia Gilpin, the Director of the Botanic Gardens at the time. This garden, known as the Scented Garden, was created to serve the nearby Institute of the Blind hostel 'Fernwood' and still retains remnants of its original design.
To learn more about the history of Abberley Park, you can read the entry in the District Plan or explore a digital version of the Official Souvenir Programme from 1940. These resources offer a fascinating insight into the park's evolution over the years.
If you're planning a special event or gathering, Abberley Park offers four bookable areas within its grounds. Whether it's the North Lawn, East Lawn, West Lawn, or the enchanting Scented Garden, these spaces provide the perfect backdrop for your occasion. Please refer to the terms and conditions for booking sites in Abberley Park.
We invite you to immerse yourself in the beauty and serenity of Abberley Park. Whether you're seeking a peaceful stroll, a fun-filled day at the playground, or a refreshing dip in the paddling pool, this establishment promises an unforgettable experience for all. So come and explore the Abberley Park Walk and discover the best of what this hidden oasis has to offer.

Reviews
"Brilliant wee park. Two awesome playgrounds. One for smaller kids by the pool and one for larger kids by the toilets. Dog friendly although dogs are meant to be on leash and people are very irresponsible especially the fact that it is a park for children and not all children like dogs. Rubbish bins available IF people bother picking up their dog poo. The pool is Brilliant for toddlers if not too cold."
"Great for toddlers, clean and the shade sails are really good. Abberly park has two playgrounds for big and little kids, and lots of spaces for picnics and play with big trees and beautiful gardens."
"Nice n clean. Always busy this time of year"
