The Groynes Northwood, Christchurch, Canterbury 8051
About the Business
Welcome to The Groynes, a must-visit establishment and park located in Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Whether you're a local or a tourist, The Groynes offers an array of activities and attractions that guarantee a fantastic family day out.
One of the highlights of The Groynes is its extensive network of walking tracks, perfect for those who enjoy exploring nature on foot. As you wander along these picturesque trails, you'll come across beautiful fishing spots where you can try your luck at catching a trout. If you prefer a more relaxed outing, there are numerous picnic areas where you can enjoy a delicious meal surrounded by the tranquil ambiance of the park.
For dog owners, The Groynes is a paradise. The institution features a large off-leash exercise park dedicated to our furry friends. However, dogs are only allowed on the Otukaikino Track if they are on a leash. This ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
Children will be delighted by the multiple playgrounds scattered throughout The Groynes. These playgrounds boast various equipment, including a flying fox, bridge, multi-play structure, see-saw, slides, and swings. In 2016, a new naturally inspired playground was installed near the boatshed, featuring a rope swing made from coconut fibre. It's a playground that promises endless fun and adventure.
During weekends, you have the opportunity to hire a boat and explore the recreation lake. Choose from pedal boats, aqua bikes, single or double canoes, and embark on a memorable water adventure. If you're up for a challenge, The Groynes offers two permanent orienteering courses, white (1.9 km) and yellow (2.6 km). You can purchase a map at the nearby Rosebank Cafe or download it from the local orienteering club.
The Groynes is not only a place for recreational activities but also a site of environmental significance. The institution takes its name from the concrete-filled wool sack blocks, known as groynes, that were placed in the Otukaikino Creek during the 1930s for flood protection. Over the years, efforts have been made to restore the Otukaikino River, remove pest plants from the lakes, and increase native plantings. These initiatives aim to improve water quality and preserve the indigenous flora and fauna of the area.
So, whether you're looking for a fun-filled day with your family, a peaceful walk in nature, or an educational experience about environmental conservation, The Groynes has something for everyone. Plan your visit today and immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of this remarkable tourist attraction.

"Nice place, for a picnic, wee nature walk, or just sitting lakeside feeding the ducks. Even better, it's not a long car ride, so close to town!!"
"Beautiful place to get away from the city and enjoy some of the sights of nature (the road noise is still audible, but it's a quick easy place to get away) Playground for the kids, free bbqs for a snack, fantastic walks, public toilets."
"Amazing place to wander around and enjoy nature"
"Great private space for families to enjoy their moments with nature"
"Beautiful place with awesome spots for walks, picnics and plenty of room for dogs to enjoy in the extensive dog park areas. The forested area prevents most of the road noise which makes the walk’s peaceful. Lakes and steams are really nice just be careful when it’s been raining because some parts of walking tracks can get flooded in places. Overall would highly recommend if you’re looking to spend some time getting exercise or relaxing on a nice day."
