Fidel's Cafe has a rich history that dates back to 1992 when it first opened as a Mexican Cafe called Little Gringo's. Despite initial skepticism, Fidel's quickly became a beloved spot in the community. Over the years, the venue expanded and transformed, adding outdoor seating, a larger kitchen, and even a street stall with a second coffee machine. Today, Fidel's is staffed by a team of 40 dedicated individuals who are passionate about serving Cuban coffee and good, honest food.
In addition to our culinary offerings, Fidel's has a strong connection to the local community. Back in 1997, the cafe formed a football team that joined the Sunday football league. This team, filled with talented individuals and a vibrant spirit, has achieved numerous titles and silverware over the past 16 years. We are proud to be a part of this legendary team and continue to support the glorious game.

"If you are looking for that hip and rebellious feel, then this place is for you. Great coffee place too and best of all reasonably priced. Just feels like a different world in there. Takes you back to your younger years of idealism."
"Great food with nice cakes and treats. A great vibe and friendly service. Not table service to you have to go and order at the table! Highly recommend the food and chicken sandwhich!"

"Fidel’s was a spectacular find when we last visited Wellington a year or two ago. Having been up early and walked a few kms, I would not be persuaded to accept any other breakfast option. Fidel’s or die. It wasn’t super busy and we were able to get a nice table inside. It took a while to place our order, but that’s ok. But then it took forever to even get the coffees. I’m not sure if we were forgotten or invisible or offensive. When the coffee did come it was good. Sadly I was a bit disappointed in the breakfast. I’d gone for the eggs benny with bacon and a side of mushrooms. It was just a bit underwhelming, like an English national football team. The mushrooms were tasteless, no seasoning, and bizarrely quite watery. The Favourite Husband was too starved to comment much on his as he was chowing down. I think I deciphered the word “average” through a spray of toast crumbs. There’s so many enticing looking cafes to choose from in this cool little city, I feel like next time this lady will be persuaded to pastures new."
"Best thick shakes in town, although you’ll pay for it at $11. But worth it. We tried their big breakfast and Caesar salad too. Both delicious. Get there early because it does get really busy after 10am. It’s a little cold in winter because half their space is outdoors too. Enjoy!"
