About the Business
Welcome to the Wendouree Centre for the Performing Arts, a prestigious institution located at 1220 Howitt Street in Wendouree, Australia. Established in 2006, this center was developed in partnership between Ballarat Grammar and the wider Ballarat community. It is conveniently situated opposite the Howitt Street shopping precinct and adjacent to Ballarat Grammar.
The construction of the Wendouree Centre for the Performing Arts took place from 2004 to 2006 on the site of the former Wendouree councils' Municipal Hall, which was originally built in 1959. The sale of the hall to Ballarat Grammar was a result of Victoria's council amalgamations in the 1990s. On 10 August 2006, the Centre was officially opened by the Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Kretser.
One of the highlights of this institution is its innovative architectural design. McIldowie & Brown Pty Ltd, the architects behind the project, were awarded for their unique work. They adopted an 'open round' theatre style reminiscent of the 18th and 19th centuries, ensuring optimal sight lines and acoustics for the audience. The design was so groundbreaking that architects from around the world visited the Centre for several years after its opening. The builder, S.J. Weir Pty Ltd, also received recognition for their excellence in construction with an award in 2007.
The main auditorium of the Wendouree Centre for the Performing Arts boasts a seating capacity of 857. Its expansive stage area is equipped to handle a wide range of performances, from opera and pipe bands to live theatre and orchestral presentations. The Centre is a versatile venue that hosts various community events, including intimate live theatre, acoustic concerts, comedy shows, dance recitals, public lectures, and seminars. It also accommodates numerous dance and theatre school gala performances, as well as local school graduation ceremonies.
In addition to its community involvement, the Centre is utilized by Ballarat Grammar's Music and Drama students. They have access to the associated rehearsal rooms, composition laboratory, and tutorial rooms. Sound and vocal studios are conveniently located next to the auditorium, catering to the requirements of the VCE Music Industry Skills course. The Centre greatly enhances the educational experience for Ballarat Grammar students, offering opportunities to develop skills in dance, theatre studies, backstage and technical work, event management, and studio techniques.
Whether you are a member of the community or a student at Ballarat Grammar, the Wendouree Centre for the Performing Arts is a remarkable facility that provides a platform for exceptional performances and enriching experiences. We invite you to explore all that this institution has to offer and join us in celebrating the arts in Wendouree.

Reviews
"Great venue, not overly impressed with the entertainment."
"Saw Pseudo Echo here and it was a amazing show, better than any of the bigger singers and bands I've seen that cost a fortune this was a fantastic night."
"The centre itself is ok and we liked the show. Sadly the seats are made for people under 160cm tall and must be less than 60kg. As someone who is 185 cm tall I was very uncomfortable and had no legroom at all. My shoulders were touching the people both sides of me so I had to sit on an angle the whole show. By intermission my legs had gone numb. Not sure I will be back as looking at the rest of the theatre it doesn't look like there are any options for a normal sized adult to sit in. Maybe it's just made for primary school kids? A shame as the show was well done and it looks like they get some good acts but I doubt I'll be back."
"Lovely theatre, simple clean layout, and most importantly comfortable seats that make it easy to see over the person in front of you"
