About the Business
Welcome to The Palmetum, a remarkable botanical garden located in Douglas, Australia. As an establishment, park, point of interest, and tourist attraction, The Palmetum is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and palm lovers alike.
At The Palmetum, you will have the opportunity to explore a stunning collection of plants from one family, the palms. This botanical garden proudly showcases all six subfamilies within the Arecaceae family. With approximately 60 species of palms native to Australia, most of them are represented in this collection. Moreover, you will also encounter around 300 species, including many rare and threatened ones in their natural habitat.
What makes The Palmetum truly special is its history and community involvement. This internationally recognized attraction was made possible through the support and planning of the Townsville community, in collaboration with the Townsville City Council Parks Services. Since its opening in September 1988, The Palmetum has continuously expanded, adding new palm varieties and scenic walks for visitors to enjoy.
Covering almost 17 hectares of land, The Palmetum offers a diverse range of habitats, catering to flora originating from the dry tropics to the wet tropical lowlands. As you explore the garden, you will come across expansive lawns, water features, and a variety of bird species. The changing landscape of The Palmetum allows for a delightful experience year after year, as you witness the seasonal transformations that take place.
Situated on 25 hectares of land bequeathed to the Townsville City Council, The Palmetum is not just a botanical garden; it is an attractive testament to the beauty of the palm family. As you stroll through the rainforest walk, you will notice large mango trees, remnants of the area's past as a mango orchard and dairy farm. The garden's design cleverly utilizes the existing habitats and landforms to create distinct climatic habitats suitable for plants from the dry tropics to the wet tropical lowlands.
Since its inauguration as a Bicentennial project, The Palmetum has become a significant botanic achievement. Today, the collection boasts 300 species, including many rare and threatened ones, making it a valuable conservation effort. Don't forget to pick up a Birds of the Palmetum brochure from the foyer of Tumbetin Lodge to enhance your visit.
To reach The Palmetum, simply travel south along Nathan Street and cross the Ross River. You will find the entrance 300 meters on the left, in the suburb of Douglas.
Please note that if you are interested in booking the park for private events, ceremonies, or alcohol consumption, you must make arrangements through the Townsville City Council's Parks Services Department, which can be accessed through their website.
Visit The Palmetum and immerse yourself in the beauty and diversity of the palm family. Experience the passion and dedication of the Townsville community, and witness the incredible botanical wonders that await you at this magnificent attraction.

"This palm garden is beautiful and relaxing to walk through or sit and have a picnic. There are water lilies along the river edge of the Palmetum. There are some huge spiders in there and saw a python just having a snooze in the garden bed. Worth a visit, maybe not on a very hot day. The is a really nice Cafe at the entrance "Absolute Cravings", food is amazing and friendly service."
