About the Business
Welcome to Currawong Child Care Centre, a convenient and family-centered early learning service located in Barton, Sydney Avenue. As an establishment and point of interest, we are dedicated to providing quality education and care for children aged six weeks to five years.
Situated in the heart of the parliamentary triangle, on the grounds of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), we prioritize access for families working with DFAT. However, we also warmly welcome and provide care for other families in our community.
At Currawong, we have a dynamic team of caring and expert educators who work collaboratively with families to meet the individual needs of each child. We believe that children are capable and competent learners who construct their understanding of the world through structured play-based learning.
By choosing our services, you not only support your child's development but also contribute to our community activities, including housing programs, community development, youth engagement, and education to prevent domestic and family violence.
Our team is incredibly diverse, with educators of varying ages and cultures. We have qualified educators from around the world who speak a wide range of languages. This diversity provides children with a rich variety of experiences and cultures to explore, grow, and learn from.
Emily, our dedicated Centre Director, has been working in the early childhood education and care sector since 2008. With her passion for empowering children and driving their own learning, she ensures that our philosophy is upheld. We believe that children are inquisitive learners, and our role as adults is to guide their learning by providing them with tools for further growth.
Our indoor and outdoor spaces have been carefully designed based on extensive research on the importance of learning environments. They are welcoming, stimulating, and responsive to children's interests and needs, fostering learning and encouraging conversations between children, educators, families, and the broader community.
Each room at Currawong has age-appropriate learning and play spaces that focus on multiculturalism, self-expression, imagination, and sensory experiences. We also have a beautiful and spacious outdoor area that encourages indoor/outdoor play, with established trees providing year-round shaded access.
Our aim is to support every child in our service to become confident and capable life-long learners who are empowered to make their own decisions. By partnering with families and communities, we develop caring and respectful relationships with children, creating a better future for tomorrow.
Our educational setup offers structured mixed-aged learning experiences through our open-plan shared outdoor area and community art space. This approach allows siblings to interact and gives children opportunities to play and learn from those outside their age group, fostering supporting and nurturing behaviors.
Routines, such as mealtimes, sleep time, toileting, and group times, form an integral part of our program. They provide a sense of consistency and predictability, serving as a framework for the rest of the day. While we place great importance on education, we also ensure ample time for games and free play.
Children's voices and input are highly valued at Currawong, and our educational programs are based on their needs and interests. We create individualized programs for each child, developed through observations and tailored to support their developmental needs. Our qualified early childhood educators provide two comprehensive summative assessments per year.
We have deep connections with the DFAT community and actively participate in events such as science shows, end-of-year parties, and celebrations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories. We are always seeking new ways to be involved in our community, such as our participation in the Floriade Community program.
YWCA Canberra, the organization behind Currawong Child Care Centre, cares for around 3000 children each week through our children's services. By choosing Currawong, you are not only providing your child with quality education and care but also contributing to the greater well-being of our community.

Reviews
"Very happy with this childcare! The staff are lovely and friendly and my son always has a smile on his face."
"My son started at Currawong when he was 11 months old and we could not be happier with our experience. We have been so impressed by the management of the service and the professional, caring educators who work there. It’s a wonderful feeling going to work knowing that your child will be in a supportive, stimulating environment that they thrive in. In the time that he’s been at Currawong we’ve seen how the experience has had a positive impact on our son’s development, confidence and social skills, and he has very strong connections with the educators and other children in the nursery room. I would highly recommend Currawong to families looking for a convenient, family-centred early childhood service."
