This strategy guides the planning, delivery, and management of play spaces, ensuring an equitable, inclusive, diverse, safe, and engaging mix of play opportunities across Canberra.

With over 500 publicly accessible play spaces owned and managed by the ACT Government, Canberra boasts significantly more play spaces than the national average. We have 6.7 playgrounds per 1,000 children under 15, compared to the Australian average of only 5.2. Most residences in Canberra are within 400 meters of a local playground, providing easy access to play spaces and the surrounding green areas, which are highly valued by the community.

The ACT Play Space Strategy serves as a guide for strategic investment across the entire play space network. It outlines a clear vision, supported by key principles, objectives, and actions, to shape the future planning, delivery, and management of play spaces in the ACT.

This strategy is the result of the 2018 citizen-led Better Suburbs Play Spaces Forum and extensive community engagement with Canberrans. It builds upon previous ACT Government play space consultations and research projects, while also contributing to the objectives of the ACT Wellbeing Framework.

We appreciate the feedback received during the community engagement in 2021, which helped shape the vision, objectives, and actions of the draft strategy. Over 700 pieces of feedback were received, with an average of 90% of survey respondents fully or mostly supporting the Strategy's vision, objectives, and actions.
