About the Business
Welcome to the STEM Education Research Centre (SERC) located at the University of Canberra in Bruce, Australia. As an establishment and point of interest, SERC is dedicated to advancing the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education through innovative research and collaborative projects.
At SERC, we strive to promote mathematics engagement and create learning opportunities for disadvantaged students. Our researchers are at the forefront of exploring topics such as processing graphical information in digital environments and visuospatial skills development. We are committed to celebrating success in numeracy, particularly in remote Indigenous contexts, and continuously contribute to the development of the Australian Curriculum.
One of our notable collaborations is the Samsung-SERC Spatial Reasoning Research Program, which aims to enhance spatial reasoning skills among students. Through our partnership with Samsung, we are making significant strides in understanding the role of spatial reasoning in mathematics education.
Stay up to date with the latest news and happenings from SERC by visiting our webpage. We are proud to announce the funding of the ARC Discovery project, "Spatial intervention: An enduring model to build mathematics achievement," which promises to revolutionize mathematics education.
Led by our esteemed Director, Professor Tom Lowrie, SERC boasts an internationally recognized research profile in mathematics and STEM education. With over 20 years of experience, Professor Lowrie has focused on the use of spatial reasoning and visual imagery in problem-solving, as well as the integration of digital tools in mathematics education. His expertise extends to developing spatial curriculum for both primary and secondary classrooms.
Joining Professor Lowrie is Senior Lecturer Dr. Tracy Logan, a passionate educator specializing in mathematics and STEM education. Dr. Logan's research centers on the critical role of spatial reasoning in mathematics success, particularly in digital environments. Through her work, she aims to improve teaching strategies and enhance students' spatial reasoning skills.
Completing our team is Dr. Sitti Purnama, whose expertise lies in the use of technology to enrich mathematics learning and teacher professional development. Dr. Purnama has collaborated with esteemed organizations such as the World Bank and has led projects to promote mathematics education in Indonesia.
