About the Business
Welcome to Chapels on Whatley, a unique establishment located in Maylands, Western Australia. Situated on Whatley Crescent, this charming café, restaurant, and store is a true point of interest for locals and visitors alike.
At Chapels on Whatley, we pride ourselves on our fine teas and food, as well as our exclusive collection of antiques and artifacts. Our fine teas are sourced directly from the finest tea gardens in China, offering you a taste of centuries-old craftsmanship and rich tea production history. From floral and sweet to peppery and smoky, our tea range includes premium blends of British, French, and Chinese black teas.
The concept of Chapels on Whatley was born from the passion of Glenn Bartel and Keith Archer, who fell in love with a century-old building they purchased in Maylands. Inspired by Glenn's "Amah" in Singapore and his love for Eastern culture, Chapels on Whatley combines the charm of the old building with a Eurasian heritage twist.
In addition to our fine teas, we also offer a unique dining experience in our café. Our menu is influenced by Eurasian cuisine and features a selection of delicious dishes that perfectly complement our teas. The café is fully licensed and boasts an extensive range of Western Australian wines, including vegan, organic, natural, and egg-free options. We also offer a variety of cocktails and alcoholic coffee options for you to enjoy.
If you're looking to take a piece of Chapels on Whatley home with you, our retail store is constantly evolving. You can browse through our collection of antiques and artifacts, as well as purchase our finest teas to enjoy in the comfort of your own home. We even offer special wholesale pricing for those interested in becoming our tea wholesalers.
We are thrilled to have been featured on WA Weekender, a popular show that showcases the best of our great state. We invite you to check it out and see what Chapels on Whatley has to offer.

"My new favourite place in Maylands! Great menu selection between both Western and Asian, awesome portion sizes, insane selection of teas! The owners and staff were super friendly and helpful, happily catered for dietaries with no issues as well. Left incredibly full and happy. Definitely the type of place where you don’t order the same meal every time because there’s everything is so good. The best high tea any of us have had. Even on a super busy day like Mother’s Day, the drinks and food were flowing quickly, with prompt top ups. Lots to explore in the shop as well. Street parking available and across from the train station."
"First time here, and I was impressed. Staff and owner are very friendly. Especially the owner, which adds to the atmosphere. Great food. There is plenty of selection of tea to choose from."
"Came to Chapels on Whatley for a birthday high tea for 8 ladies. Plenty of space for more. Started with a black rice pudding, scones with jam and cream and cucumber sandwiches. All very nice; we ran out of jam and cream and the servers were very happy to get us more... Then the towers came out. There was a beautiful arrangement of sweet and savoury foods including savoury scone with salmon and cream cheese, savoury profiterole with red capsicum and cream cheese, quiche, maybe a kimchi dumpling, lemon curd tart, Nutella tart, salted caramel tart, caramel slice and macaroons. I may have forgotten one or two things there but the high tea was definitely heavy on the sweets compared to others. The high tea was quite nice and the service and atmosphere was great. I would definitely come back but have had better tasting high teas elsewhere."
"We enjoyed a relaxing lunch at this fusion cafe. The venue is really comfortable and uniquely special set amongst old world Asian furniture, and there's usually ambient classic Chinese music playing in the background. The food seems to be fusion Asian and local cafe, along with coffee and tea offerings. Overall food is ok if not a bit generic in taste and if you're after good Asian food you'll be better off going to a proper Asian restaurant. However, it's still good for a meal, tea and coffee in an eclectic venue."
