After spending two years in Auckland, A/Prof McCarthy returned to Brisbane in 2006 and has since dedicated herself to clinical trials research. She currently serves as the Chair of the Breast Cancer Trials Medical Oncology Craft Group and is a member of their Scientific Advisory Committee. Her clinical and research interests extend beyond breast cancer to include the management of gynecological cancers and sarcomas. A/Prof McCarthy is actively involved in several national advisory boards and guideline groups, as well as breast cancer consumer groups such as the Kim Walter’s Choices Program and the Breast Cancer Network of Australia.
A/Prof McCarthy's work has been published in leading journals, and she is an investigator on several grants, including those from the NHMRC and Queensland Cancer Council. Since September 2009, she has held the position of Associate Professor in Medicine at the University of Queensland.
In addition to her impressive academic and research background, A/Prof McCarthy is currently involved in several important clinical trials, including a Phase 1 study of OP-1250 in combination with the CDK4/6 inhibitor Palbociclib for advanced or metastatic HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. She is also participating in an open-label, multinational Phase 3b/4 study of Trastuzumab Deruxtecan for previously treated advanced/metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer, with or without baseline brain metastasis. Furthermore, she is involved in a study focusing on de-escalation adjuvant chemotherapy in HER2 /ER-/Node-neg early breast cancer patients who achieved pCR after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and dual HER2 blockade.
