Tarnbuk Centre 411 Nepean Highway, Frankston, Victoria 3199
About the Business
Welcome to the Tarnbuk Centre, a remarkable establishment located in Frankston, Australia. This health institution is a point of interest for both locals and visitors alike. The center was officially opened with great excitement and support from esteemed individuals such as the Minister for Mental Health, Gabrielle Williams, the Member for Frankston, Paul Edbrooke MP, Peninsula Health Board Chair, Diana Heggie, and our Cultural Lead and Elder, Aunty Helen Bnads.
The opening ceremony was a memorable event, highlighted by a traditional smoking ceremony and welcome to country performed by Indigenous Elder Uncle Mick, overseen by Peninsula Health Aboriginal Elder Aunty Helen. This ceremony was conducted to purify and bless the new space, ensuring a positive and inclusive environment.
The Tarnbuk Centre brings together the Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs teams under one roof, fostering closer collaboration and improving continuity of care for clients. Peninsula Health Acting Chief Executive, Helen Cooper, expressed her enthusiasm for this co-location, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on both clients and staff. Already, staff members have settled into their new surroundings, and there is a palpable sense of positivity and motivation within the center.
The new, contemporary, open, and light-filled building provides an ideal working environment for staff, attracting the best professionals to deliver exceptional services. Peninsula Health Mental Health Operations Director, Bronwyn Lawman, explained that co-locating these services was a logical decision, as many clients require support for both mental health issues and substance use. The previous buildings were no longer suitable, but the Tarnbuk Centre offers ample space and modern facilities to run therapy support groups and programs onsite.
The holistic approach to care is a key focus at the Tarnbuk Centre, with the inclusion of a wellness clinic and access to dietetics, exercise physiology, and music therapy. This comprehensive approach enhances service delivery and encourages more individuals to seek the support they need. The central location in Frankston's business district also ensures better access to other essential services for clients.
The facility has been purpose-built to meet the current and future needs of mental health and alcohol and other drugs services. Working closely with architects, Peninsula Health has created a space that not only accommodates present requirements but also allows for future expansion. This commitment to growth and improvement reflects the dedication of the institution to providing the best possible care.
The new facility is adorned with Indigenous artwork, symbolizing the deep respect and acknowledgment of the Indigenous culture and the traditional owners of the land. Additionally, the name "Tarnbuk" carries significant meaning, translating to "pick yourself up and get better" in Indigenous language. This name change aims to reduce the stigma associated with seeking assistance for mental health and drug and alcohol services, encouraging individuals to seek treatment and access the support they need without barriers.
At Peninsula Health, we are committed to meeting the needs of our diverse community in an appropriate and respectful manner. We recognize and honor the Traditional Custodians of the lands where our Health Services are located, specifically the Bunurong/Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging. Our goal is to provide an inclusive environment that responds to the unique needs, preferences, and expectations of our consumers and carers.
Join us at the Tarnbuk Centre, where exceptional care and support are provided under one roof. Discover a place where individuals can find the help they need to pick themselves up and get better.

"Terrible service not sure why these people are even working in mental health if they can’t help people who’s panic attacks Could cause their death. The public deserve better staff who care and listen to experiences of those with anxiety and autistic trauma and are over 30"
"Saw the psychiatrist here who agreed that I don’t seem depressed. After that, the only solution I was given was to increase my anti-depressant medication!? Where’s the logic in that? I spoke to another clinician about it who became defensive. What a joke."
"I attended the clinic on 14/12/18. I suffer from panic disorder and psuedo-seizures cause by this disorder; also, since suffering these seizures I am unable to walk unassisted. Whilst discussing with clinicians my mum was removed from the room to talk to someone else. During this period I had a panic attack/seizure. They let me fall to the floor and I was crushed between the footpedals and underneath the seat of the wheelchair like a ball; drifting in and out of consciousness. All the while they were having conversations about their plans for the week, secret santa, threatening to leave me their as they had other clients etc. Part of the seizures involve me screaming sometimes and the lady clinician bent right down up to my face and sternly told me that they were going to call the police if I did not stop. I WAS STILL HAVING A PANIC ATTACK AND SEIZURE! Finally, when my body colapsed from exhaustion, they aided me back into my wheelchair and I told them "I want to leave now!". They wheeled me back into the foyer, still undergoing a panic attack and then FINALLY went to get my mum so she could take me home. It was absolutely disgusting treatment. I am fortunate enough to have a safe environment to go home to, but many don't and this scares me greatly. This is supposed to be a mental health service, but the treatment I experienced was borderline abuse, as though I was just acting up and it was not INVOLUNTARY. I'd hate to see how others with worse cases of mental illness are treated. I am disappointed. I was screaming for help. I came to you for help. And I was left crushed under my wheelchair seizing, alone and afraid. DISGUSTING. Wish I could give 0 stars as well."
"I wish I could give no stars. I’m actually saddened by the most recent review as I feel like i’m experiencing the same things. I’ve gone all the way to the mental health commissioner as time and time again the service fails."
"Davies st clinic is a absolute joke! Me and my family have been dealing with them for a long long time and my brother was desperate for help and he was turned away every time... These doctors did not help my brother they fed him more pills including monthly depos. I told them this would happen I told everyone no one listened and now his gone :( my dear brother suffered beyond belief thanks to yous and the Frankston hospital who refused to see him time and time again , Please if you have family members with mental illness try everything in your power to take them to another Clinic because my little brother is now dead and nothing is going to bring him back! Thank you very much government for your lack of support Rest in peace Michael Angelo Charalmbous :("
