Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve Cape Schanck Road, Cape Schanck, Victoria 3939
About the Business
Welcome to the Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve, located on Cape Schanck Road in Australia. This establishment is not only a park and a point of interest, but also a popular tourist attraction. Perched majestically atop dramatic cliffs, the Cape Schanck Lighthouse has been guiding ships to safety since 1859. Take a guided tour and listen to captivating stories of the light keepers who have maintained this beacon of hope throughout the years. For an even more breathtaking experience, book a tour with a local operator and climb the lighthouse's sandstone steps up to the still functioning lamp room, where you'll be rewarded with spectacular views over the Southern Peninsula and Bass Strait.
The Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve offers more than just a historical landmark. It boasts stunning landscapes, mysterious volcanic features, unspoiled and wild beaches, and scenic walking tracks with awe-inspiring ocean views. Steeped in rich European history, this area is recognized as a heritage-listed precinct due to its historical significance.
Embark on a short circuit walk from the carpark towards the Cape and you'll find yourself on a wooden staircase and boardwalk that descends to the beach and rock platform. From various lookouts along the way, you'll be treated to panoramic views of geological formations such as Pulpit Rock and the Devils Desk, both shaped by millions of years of volcanic and geological activity. However, please exercise caution on the rock platform as large unexpected waves may wash across the rocks.
Within the Cape Schanck Lighthouse precinct, you'll find the heritage-listed lighthouse, a museum, and the former lighthouse keeper's residence. These buildings, constructed in 1859, are excellent examples of the architectural style of that era.
If you're up for a longer adventure, the 2.6km Bushrangers Bay Track departs from the carpark and offers some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery within a day's drive from Melbourne.
The Cape Schanck Day Visitor Area provides several scenic viewing platforms, picnic tables, and toilet facilities for your convenience. However, please note that there is no drinking water available at this location.
As you explore the trails, keep an eye out for the beautiful native orchids that bloom in spring. Multiple lookouts offer stunning views of Pulpit Rock and the Devil's Desk, both created by millions of years of volcanic activity.
Cape Schanck is a renowned whale watching spot as these majestic creatures migrate through Bass Strait. Numerous lookout points provide spectacular views of these magnificent animals. Additionally, this area is teeming with wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for unique and fascinating species.

Although Cape Schanck is undeniably beautiful, it is important to note that the beaches in the area are not suitable for swimming due to strong rips and large waves. These beaches are unpatrolled, remote, and have limited access. If you're looking to swim, the closest patrolled beach is at Gunnamatta, which is serviced by the Surf Life Saving Club during the summer months.
Please be mindful of the fragile coastal vegetation and stick to the designated tracks to limit erosion and minimize damage.
Nature is ever-changing, so it's advisable to check this page for any updates before your visit.
We are committed to preserving our parks and the natural and cultural heritage they hold for future generations to enjoy. "Beautiful scenery, good walk down to the pebble beach"
"Cape Schanck offers walking tracks, spectacular views over the Southern Peninsula and Bass Strait."
"As lighthouses and their surroundings go, it doesn't get much better than this! You don't have to venture far from the carpark before you start coming across some wonderful views. The scenery is indeed stunning and just keeps getting better as you head towards the boardwalk. While the amazing wooden structure it is referred to as simply a 'boardwalk', it may be better named the 'stairway to heaven'. It is incredibly beautiful (in a heavenly way) and the views change all the time. We were also very lucky to spot some whales in the distance. There are many places to rest along the walk or even stop for a picnic. The signs around Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve are very good so you always know where you are. Whatever your level of fitness, you will enjoy this incredible part of Victoria's rugged coastline. Show it off to interstate or overseas visitors or just enjoy it for all its majestic glory!"
"βIf you are writing the clearest, truest words you can find and doing the best you can to understand and communicate, this will shine on paper like its own little lighthouse. Lighthouses dont go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining.β ~ Anne Lamott"
"Cape Schanck gorgeous! ~free, parking is accessible but can get very busy during peak Summer/School Holidays.... windy so wear a hat that won't blow away! ~ the Lighthouse & museum is a paid tour and runs a few times a day during the holidays, it's not a must, but worth doing once....a beautiful day though even just enjoying the beauty of the Cape and walk from the extensive viewing platforms, without doing the tour. Enjoy ~: )"
