About the Business
Welcome to Buxton Trout & Salmon Farm, located in the picturesque town of Buxton, Australia. Our establishment is not just a store or a tourist attraction, but a point of interest where you can experience the thrill of catching your own fresh food. Whether you are young or old, experienced or a beginner, we guarantee a catch and a fun day out for everyone.
Situated at the foot of Buxton's Cathedral Mountain Ranges in the Murrindindi Shire, our farm has been proudly producing Australian premium freshwater trout and salmon since 1958. As a family-owned and operated business for over 40 years, we take great pride in providing a unique and memorable fishing experience for all our visitors.
Only a 90-minute drive from Melbourne's CBD, our farm offers not only fantastic fishing opportunities but also a chance to explore the beautiful surrounding area. There is plenty to see and do, making it an ideal destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
Trout and salmon are versatile fish, perfect for cooking with various flavors or simply enjoying on their own. Not only do they taste great, but they are also packed with Omega 3 fish oils, making them a healthy choice. What sets us apart is that we hatch all our own fish right here on our farm in Buxton, ensuring that they are as fresh as can be with zero food miles throughout the entire process.
One of our specialties is our traditional Mountain Ash wood fire smoked trout. Using time-honored methods passed down by a local Dutchman in the seventies, our fish are brined for 12 hours and then slowly smoked for 5 hours using zero electricity in our purpose-built smokers. This process creates a unique flavor that has made our hot-smoked Mountain Ash Smoked Trout famous across Australia. In fact, it has been featured on the popular TV show Masterchef and is widely regarded as the best in the country.
At Buxton Trout & Salmon Farm, we offer more than just fishing. You can also learn about our freshwater trout, freshwater salmon, mountain ash smoked trout, and premium hand-milked caviar. So come and join us at 2118 Maroondah Highway in Buxton, Victoria, Australia, for a memorable day of fishing, relaxation, and delicious food.

"We had a fantastic morning at the farm on Saturday. But it was a morning we could have done with a coffee."
"Been here a few times now. We try to drop in each time we are in the area to get some fresh caught trout, Caviar or smoked Trout. They have a newly built, very large undercover area that can easily cater for a 100 or so people looking out onto the ponds. Heaps of BBQs both at the shelter and sprinkled around the ponds to cook your freshly caught Trout or Salmon. They prepare your fish for you once you've caught it and get it ready to cook for free and pack it in ice if it's take away. A great location for a few hours or a whole day of fishing in the very green landscaped pondage areas. You pay to enter to fish per person, then for each fish you catch you pay by the kilogram. Price per kilogram is for the live/whole fish and is about the same as what you pay for a cleaned/gutted fish at the supermarket. But the fish you catch is FRESH as you can get! Pond to BBQ in 10 minutes or so! NO catch and release, whatever you catch you have to keep and pay for. Entry price includes a fishing rod per person, which is nothing fancy but perfectly adequate as well as bait and bucket. You can bring you own rod etc, but the fee is the same. Whatever you catch is paid for and includes gutting and cleaning, ready for cooking, bagged with crushed ice for the trip home, so bring an Esky. There are under cover picnic tables and barbeques if you want to cook and eat your fish etc on the spot. As we did, staff can also go out with you and net a Trout or Salmon for you, pick the ones you want and prepare them for you. We got 2 very large Rainbow Trout, 2Kg and 1Kg approx, prepped, paid and leaving in about 20minutes. A variety of smoked fish, Caviar (in season), honeys, souvenirs etc also available. If you have young children, please be very vigilant: ponds are completely open and unfenced. Don't take your eyes of bubs and toddlers etc even for a second. Catching fish or other animals, also necessarily involves killing them. This can be confronting for both children and adults, but can be a valuable learning experience. If you don't want to do it yourself, staff are available to despatch your catch quickly and humanely."
"Great place to visit and spend a day with family and friends. Highly recommended for great experience this is a must place to visit. Helpful and friendly staff that will make sure you have a great day."
"I've been fishing at Buxton Trout & Salmon Farm for many years. It's a great drive up to Buxton and a really good spot to go fishing for some salmon and trout. An early start is always good here. I always end up taking home so good catches."
"We've visited multiple times and keep coming back as it's quite a unique experience. There is a large shaded BBQ area for you to grill the fish you catch so it's a great place to relax and enjoy deliciously fresh trout & salmon with friends and family. For the salmon, the friendly staff also do sashimi (additional $10 service fee per fish applies) and it is awesome watching them expertly carve the salmon into sashimi pieces. And yes, it tastes heavenly. If you just want to catch fish quick to cook there are ponds at the back where you can hook fresh fish in minutes. Overall, an absolute delightful place to visit for, or as part of a daytrip."
