Royal Park Nature Play Playground 28 Gatehouse Street, Parkville, Victoria 3052
About the Business
Welcome to Royal Park Nature Play Playground, a hidden gem located in Parkville, Australia. Situated on Gatehouse Street, number 28, this establishment is not just a park, but a point of interest that offers a unique experience for visitors of all ages.
Royal Park holds great historical and cultural significance. It is situated on land that has been of immense importance to the people of the Eastern Kulin Nation for generations. Additionally, this park played a pivotal role in the ill-fated expedition of Burke and Wills to the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1860. It was also the site of the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria and later became part of the renowned Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens.
During significant moments in Australian history, Royal Park served as a major military camp and training ground during both World Wars. It was a crucial mobilization point for ANZACS heading to the Western Front in World War I and served as a camp for Australian and US troops before their deployment to the Pacific War campaigns in World War II.
In 1984, the park underwent a redesign that created vast open spaces, providing a tranquil escape within the city. As you explore, you'll encounter stretches of open grass, lightly timbered eucalypt forests, sports grounds, wetlands, and beautifully manicured gardens. It's hard to believe you're still in the heart of Melbourne.
At Royal Park Nature Play Playground, we are embracing technology to enhance the visitor experience. By utilizing sensors strategically placed throughout the park, we are able to gather valuable data about its usage. This information is crucial for our park planners, designers, and landscape architects as they review and update the masterplan that has guided the park since 1997. Through these insights, we can identify trends and opportunities for improvement, ensuring that Royal Park continues to meet the needs and desires of the community.
Getting to Royal Park is a breeze. Simply hop on the Upfield line train to Royal Park Station, or catch trams 58 and 59 on Flemington Road, tram 19 on Royal Parade, or bus 505 on Poplar Road. We want to ensure that accessing this natural oasis is convenient for everyone.
As an institution, the City of Melbourne acknowledges and respects the Traditional Owners of the land, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin. We pay our respects to their Elders, both past and present. We recognize and honor the deep spiritual, cultural, and political connection that these Indigenous groups have to this land, spanning over 2000 generations. We are committed to our reconciliation journey, striving to strengthen relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples for the betterment of all Victorians.
Come and immerse yourself in the natural beauty and rich history of Royal Park Nature Play Playground. Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, a place for outdoor activities, or a chance to connect with nature, this institution offers it all. Discover the magic of Royal Park and create lasting memories with your loved ones.

"Don't the pictures speak for themselves, what an adventure, more parks like this please. This is the best park I've come across. It's a hidden gem."
"A great kids playground to spend some quality time with you little ones. This is a very spacious playground and is located conveniently right next to Royal Children’s Hospital, Royal Melbourne and Royal Women’s Hospital are also a short drive. Street parking is usually available but could be a problem to find a spot on weekends though. It has lots of activities for kids. Highly recommended."
"Perfect way to spend time waiting for appointments while at the Royal Children’s Hospital! This is a diverse playground with different zones catering to all ages (including adventurous adults!). Low and high ropes courses, various swings and slides, water and sand play/pumping stations and several other climbing structures make this nature playground perfect for expending energy and engaging in active and imaginative play. Always a highlight of our trips to the Children’s."
"If you're looking for a fun place to take your kids, this spot is a must-visit. There are plenty of obstacle courses that both kids and parents will enjoy, but keep in mind that there isn't much shade, so be sure to come prepared with hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water. There's also a water fountain that kids love, so it's a good idea to bring extra clothes if you plan on staying a while. I personally recommend going in the late evening to avoid the heat of the day.And if you're planning a family BBQ, you're in luck! There are several BBQ facilities available for use. All in all, this is a great spot for families looking to enjoy a fun day outdoors together."
"Absolutely amazing spot, we could have spent all day here. Creative and interesting equipment encouraging children to use their imagination and problem solve, right down to the different paths and access points between areas. Our one year old (not yet walking) was the youngest playing, and so many parents were getting involved too which was great. The big hill was perfect for rolling down, which the 3 year old loved, and we also went on a big walk/bike ride around the park. The pump/waterfall and sandpit combo were a favourite. We were there on a cool day but I can imagine shade would be an issue on warm days. Definitely recommend."
