About the Business
Welcome to Wonguim Wilam, an establishment, park, and point of interest located in Warrandyte, Australia. Formerly known as Lions Park, this upgraded park and land along the picturesque Yarra River will soon be given an official Woi-wurrung name, honoring the language, culture, and heritage of the local Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people.
After extensive consultation with key stakeholders, Manningham Council, together with the Warrandyte Lions Club and Masterplan Community Reference Group, has shown their support to adopt a Woi-wurrung name for the park. This commitment to reconciliation is rooted in deep respect for the rich and complex nature of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung culture and heritage.
Manningham Mayor Cr Andrew Conlon expresses his gratitude to the Warrandyte Lions Club for their leadership in embracing this important opportunity for reconciliation. While Council is finalizing its Reconciliation Action Plan, they firmly believe that true reconciliation requires commitment from the entire community.
In the coming weeks, Wonguim Wilam will receive an approved Woi-wurrung name, as recognized by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, paying homage to the original owners of this land. This significant change will be accompanied by informative signage, taking visitors on a journey through the park's history and highlighting the involvement of the Warrandyte Lions Club.
The Warrandyte Lions Club has been a steadfast custodian of the park for over 40 years, maintaining the park and tennis courts, and contributing $45,000 towards the latest exercise equipment. President David Englefield expresses the club's honor in looking after the park and providing a beloved gathering space for the community. Their commitment to making a difference and improving the lives of the Warrandyte people and the wider community is commendable.
Anticipated to begin early next year and completed by mid-2022, the playspace upgrade will enhance the park's facilities. Manningham Council will work closely with the Warrandyte Lions Club, Warrandyte Historical Society, and the Warrandyte Community Association to ensure the park continues to honor its past and present custodians.
As you explore Wonguim Wilam, you will encounter significant signage that tells the story of the park's history and the contributions of the Warrandyte Lions Club. Manningham Council also plans to recognize the club's contributions on a plaque and through interpretive signage.
We invite you to visit Wonguim Wilam and experience the natural beauty and cultural significance of this remarkable park. Manningham Council acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people as the Traditional Owners of the land and waterways in Manningham. We pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging, valuing their ongoing contributions to our cultural heritage. We also recognize and respect Australia's First Peoples as Traditional Owners across the country, promoting reconciliation between all. Furthermore, Manningham Council appreciates the diverse backgrounds and cultures that have enriched our community over the years.
Join us in celebrating the heritage and community spirit at Wonguim Wilam, a place where nature, culture, and history intertwine.
