Galway Cathedral Gaol Road, Galway, County Galway H91 A780
About the Business
Welcome to Galway Cathedral, a magnificent church and a true point of interest in Galway, Ireland. Located on Gaol Road, this establishment stands as a place of worship, attracting both locals and tourists alike.
One of the highlights of our institution is the annual summer series of international concerts, which will commence on July 13, 2023. These concerts bring together talented musicians from around the world, creating a vibrant and culturally enriching experience within the grand walls of the Cathedral.
As you enter the Cathedral, you'll be struck by the contrasting readings from Kings and Matthew's gospel. Elijah, a biblical figure, discovered God not in the violence of nature but in a gentle whisper. This juxtaposition invites contemplation and reflection, allowing visitors to delve into the spiritual realm and explore the depths of faith.
In a world where physical evidence is often demanded for something to be accepted as fact, we recognize the significance of spiritual experiences. Richard Dawkins and atheists like him may seek tangible proof, but here at Galway Cathedral, we embrace the intangible. We believe that spiritual encounters, by their very nature, transcend the physical realm and offer a deeper understanding of our existence.
Adding to the rich history of the Cathedral, we pay homage to St. Helena, who was born in the third century AD. Believed to be of Greek origin, she hailed from Drepanum in the province of Bithynia, Asia Minor. St. Helena's presence in our institution serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of faith and the profound impact individuals can have on the world.
Galway Cathedral is also part of the Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh & Kilfenora, a registered charity. With the charity number (RCN) 20014438 / CHY 7072, we strive to serve our community and provide a sanctuary for spiritual nourishment and growth.
Whether you seek solace, cultural enrichment, or a glimpse into the history of faith, Galway Cathedral welcomes you. Come and immerse yourself in the tranquility, beauty, and spirituality that this remarkable institution has to offer.

"Impressive Cathedral! I was here in 2014 before the recent renovations and then again in 2021. When in Galway I would definitely recommend a visit, whether you are religious or just want to learn about the history and see the architecture. There is no entry fee, but the suggested donation of 2€ per visitor is very fair."
"No matter what religious beliefs you have this Cathederal is a must visit.Situated in the heart of Galway city, its enormous structure and design is so powerful.Immaculately kept ,clean and spacious. The architecture is simply amazing ."
"Absolutely beautiful cathedral. Came in whilst visiting the Galway area and I was absolutely blown away by the stained glass windows and enormous statues inside. There is a ton of seating the front, sides and rear of the main alter and I’d love to visit again for mass. The shop sells amazing items including beautiful marble rosaries and religious items for all occasions. Definitely stop in if you’re passing by!"
"I'm not a Christian by any means but I do appreciate the serenity of a location and this has it. We visited St Mary's in Dingle and that serenity was lacking. The building was more modern than expected but the colours in the dome and from the stained glass were sublime. Sometimes I envy people their faith and get the fact that buildings like this can reinforce it. I won't be converted to religion any time soon but I think we'd be worse off without places like this where you can come and reflect regardless of your spiritual leanings."
"I visited the Cathedral on a cold & blustery day whilst waiting for my mum who was up visiting in UHG. When I walked in the door I was surprised by the space and dark walls but also the light that came through the stained glass windows and the silence even though there were alot of people walking around. Although the pews were marked out for social distance there was no problem moving in & out of them. As I had a good bit of time I just sauntered around with trying to take everything in. I met a lovely person who very kindly offered me a Miraculous Medal for my ill relative and also included him in their prayers later that day. Whilst I spent at least an hour looking at all the decorative mosaics, various stained glass windows that had been donated through the years, the model of the Cathedral, organ and various displays dotted around the i side I didn't feel rushed and probably have spent more time. It cost 1.50e to park for the hour and had no problem finding a spot but there is another carkpark accross the road where you can park all day for 6.50e"
