"Traditional open water swimming venue, formerly location for Kilkenny swimming club (1960s), with changing huts for members. Club members built the swimming platform under the direction of Mr Tom Timmins. Sadly the platform area has been totally neglected by Kilkenny Co Council for the last 50 years. Kilkenny Co Co continue to inspire, seat enjoyed and greatly missed by many removed in Nov '21 (had reached eol) and by July '22 still not replaced, Hurry up please! Not a major project! And now July 13th, outdoor staff arrive with new garden furniture, speedy response or what, big shout out to the boys and girls in the upper echelons of KK CoCo. Alas and unsurprisingly the word from the high castle in Lower John St is that no further upgrades or maintenance is planned for the linear park side of the weir (official announcement late August '22). Lifeguards on duty in the summer months, but the swimming platform where many learned to swim and completed their Royal Life Saving Society Training will soon be washed away by winter floods. The club logo was the dipper, often seen doing some early morning fishing and head bobbing while perusing the water,"
"The weir swimming area is absolutely beautiful however I wouldn't recommend it for families with young children as they would need to be competent swimmers, there is a shallow rocky part but it is beside the weir which is pretty dangerous. There is a lifeguard there sometimes and the water is nice and deep. There is enough parking beside the river for about 4-5 cars and there is a nice place where you can sit with your feet in the water, there is also a long sitting area to leave your stuff and to sit on. I would definitely recommend this place to most people."
"Watch out for builders rubble with rusty nails at point of entry and other access/egress points. Good clean water when not in flood. Stunning swimming venue."
"Great area to go for a walk especially if you have kids. Right beside the river which a lot of people swim in during the summer. Very peaceful too st times, benches are available to sit and relax. It's about a 20 minute walk from the entrance to the meadows and there are a few nice stops along the way."
"Great little swimming hole for the unusual hot Irish summer. Life guards on duty with ladders for entry. Free to use with a small layby for parking. Waters cold and refreshing jump in!"
