"Abandoned by the last permanent residents in the late 1970s, SCATTERY ISLAND is today a place where interesting traces of history are hidden among wild nature, dating back to the 6th century, when St. Sean founded the first monastery here. The most characteristic monument is the round tower towering over the island. Numerous ruins of churches, a cemetery, a holy spring, old houses, make up the unique charm of a deserted piece of land, where tourists roam today scaring away the flocks of wild rabbits that have taken over the island. The strategic location at the mouth of the River Shannon resulted in the placement of a lighthouse in the southern part of the island and a battery of cannons in a small fort. We can see with our own eyes how nature slowly absorbs traces of human presence. The best way to get here is to take the ferry , which departs the nearby Kilrush harbor twice a day during the summer season . After a dozen or so minutes of the cruise, we can start exploring the lost world of Scattery Island."
"Always a grand day on Scattery! Tour guides are always wonderful, especially head guide John."
