"I stayed at this YHA from 2023/March for 2 nights at ladies room 2. Pros: - the bus drivers of Route 442 can make a drop off at the front of the hostel - rates are incredibly reasonable and the facilities are well maintained - hostel is relatively quiet in the evenings past 11pm Cons - location is far from most of the attractions in peak district with the exception of thor's cave which can be part of a relatively long hike - crowd is older and caters mostly to locals. Quite popular with older, British men - the conversations in the living room area could be heard from the room I was checked in."
"This is the 3rd time I've stayed there, in a single room at a good discount price (off-peak.). Normally I could never afford to stay anywhere so old and posh. We (my friend & I) had a cooked breakfast every day in their restaurant/cafe, & made our own meal in the well-equipped self-catering kitchen every evening. The drying room for coats & boots etc ( and another guest's nappies etc) is brilliant. The staff are ultra helpful. There was a prob with the heating in my room but they resolved it efficiently. I left a bag in the local church & the lady from the breakfast room offered to drive me down to get it quickly. I walked there instead but it was so lovely that she had made that offer. All the woodstoves are now completely out of use, shame as I'd told my friend how lovely they are. That's the only reason I've dropped a star. They provide print outs of 3 local walks from the door. - We did one of them and the instructions were a bit out of date and also not completely clear - that is always the case with every written walk always in all my walking books! As long as you also have your OS map it's fine. The several sitting rooms were all cosy and kept very clean. There were quite a lot of little kids there who all seemed very happy, and the hostel provided a good number of games for them. There is a rookery in the grounds which is great, and we saw some interesting birds from the downstairs windows. We had a great holiday there."
"This is a great hostel in a lovely location. The village is nice and there are great walks on your doorstep. The staff were all friendly and helpful and dealt with a couple of issues with the room swiftly. They were having some teething issues with new central heating, which meant some rooms were cold. The kitchen is a bit small for the size of hostel, and meant it was hectic at peak times."
"What an amazing, unique and historic building! Staff was very friendly and helpful. With it being a historic building, you would expect some noise. However, the level of continuous ongoing noise from people walking in the room above our room 12 in the main building was truly unbelievable. Our family was kept awake for hours. Having looked back at previous reviews on tripadvisor, it looks like the hostel has not found a solution for this problem since it was publicly raised two years ago! Our problem had been addressed twice with reception on duty on the night (who was non committal and blaming it on the “old building”) and with HQ the following morning – resulting in an earlier departure than anticipated. Also, room 12 had no storage or cupboard as advertised on the website (and which is standard in all the other YHA hostels we stayed in England so far) – it looks like the item(s) had been taken out, leaving the room bare and looking like a prison cell. If you are looking for self-catering, be aware – the self-catering kitchen is badly stocked and there are no supplies of cups, glasses and spoons for breakfast – I had to go into the main café area to obtain some for my family. (I have not attempted to cook, so cannot comment on that front). This is a basic requirement and could be sorted out easily. This was actually a theme of conversation with other self-catering guests dissatisfied with the situation. I would consider another stay in this hostel, however, in a different room – and Room 12 should be taken out from their booking system as it is not fit for purpose."
"This is historic building converted into hostel for travellers in Peak District. It is lovely place to be, it was expected good ! The breakfast here is good too don’t miss out on that !
