Originally home to the Mamu people, the first Europeans stumbled upon this beautiful coastal region when the ship "Maria" was shipwrecked in 1872. The first settler, Thomas Henry Fitzgerald, arrived in 1879 and established a sugar farm, which eventually led to the town's initial name, Geraldton. To avoid confusion with another town in Western Australia, the name was changed to Innisfail in 1910. Inis Fáil, meaning 'Island of Destiny' in Gaelic, is an old name for Ireland.
