Welcome to the Kawerau i-SITE Visitor Information Centre, located in the beautiful Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. As a local government office and travel agency, we are here to provide you with all the information and assistance you need to make the most of your visit to Kawerau.

One of the highlights of our area is the breathtaking Tarawera Falls, which can be accessed through Kawerau. However, we want to inform you that there will be tree felling operations taking place in the Tarawera Road/Tarawera Falls area. This means that there will be an increase in logging trucks, crews, and machinery in the vicinity.

To ensure the safety of the public, Māori Investments Limited (MIL) has decided not to issue any visitor permits for the Tarawera Falls during weekdays (Monday - Friday). This safety measure will come into effect from Monday, 31 October 2022. Moving forward, permits will only be issued for weekends and public holidays.

Please note that the last day to obtain permits for weekdays is Friday, 28 October 2022. We will keep you updated on any further changes regarding the permits and access to the Tarawera Falls.
