About the Business
Welcome to NIWA Dunedin, located at 38 Harrow Street in the beautiful city of Dunedin, New Zealand. As an establishment and point of interest, we are dedicated to providing valuable research and resources to improve our understanding of climate change and its impact on our coastal freshwater.
One of our recent accomplishments includes a study conducted in Wellington, which has the potential to enhance worldwide access to coastal freshwater. Alongside this study, we have developed education resources that assist teachers and students in navigating NIWA's Climate Change Adaptation Toolbox. Additionally, we have created an engaging game that allows players to identify their priorities, assess climate risks and resilience, and explore adaptation options.
In an extraordinary event, the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai (HT-HH) volcano erupted, causing tsunamis and shockwaves that reached continents across the Pacific. This eruption marked the largest atmospheric explosion recorded on Earth in over a century. Thanks to funding from The Nippon Foundation, NIWA and SEA-KIT collaborated to survey an extensive area of over 22,000km2 surrounding the volcano. This included mapping previously unexplored seafloor spanning 14,000km2 as part of The Nippon Foundation GEBCO Seabed 2030 project.
At NIWA Dunedin, we are committed to advancing our knowledge of climate change and its effects on our environment. We invite you to explore our website to learn more about our groundbreaking research and initiatives. For further information about the Tonga eruption and our involvement, please visit our website at https://niwa.co.nz/news/tonga-eruption-confirmed-as-largest-ever-recorded.
Join us at NIWA Dunedin as we strive to make a difference in understanding and adapting to the challenges posed by climate change.
