About the Business
Welcome to Community Law Otago, located at 169 Princes Street in Dunedin, Otago, Aotearoa / New Zealand. As a trusted establishment and point of interest, our mission is to provide free legal information, assistance, representation, and education to the people of Otago.
At Community Law Otago, we understand that legal matters can be overwhelming and costly. That's why we offer free legal advice by appointment, either through face-to-face interviews at our Dunedin office or at one of our outreach clinics across Dunedin and wider Otago. Our appointment times are conveniently scheduled between 11am and 12.30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, as well as between 5.30pm and 7.00pm on Monday and Wednesday evenings from March to November.
If you prefer to seek advice over the phone, our dedicated team will ensure your calls are returned within normal office hours. Feel free to contact us via telephone or email for further details.
As a community legal service, we strive to address unmet legal needs. This includes areas of law that traditional lawyers may not cover, as well as providing assistance to those who cannot afford traditional legal services. Our qualified and experienced lawyers are available to provide initial legal information and advice. In special circumstances, we may even take you on as an ongoing client, working closely with you to resolve your legal issues.
In addition to providing legal services, we are committed to informing and educating our community about their legal rights and responsibilities. To achieve this, we produce a range of plain-English legal publications and offer legal education on various topics in different formats.
Community Law Otago is dedicated to meeting unmet legal needs within the community. We work within the articles of the Treaty of Waitangi and strive to develop a partnership response with Tangata Whenua in the provision of legal services. Furthermore, we actively advocate for appropriate law reform to assist individuals and groups in the community. Additionally, we support and contribute to the development of the community law centre movement.
Whether you're seeking legal advice, information, or education, Community Law Otago is here to support you. Contact us today to schedule an appointment or to learn more about our services.

"Great Friendly service, they listen to your situation and give an advice at what other options and service links there are to follow form their point of contact and onwards. Keep you informed and provide support in need They have an open policy but pays to contact to make an appointment. Hope it helps others !"
"Friendly and welcoming when I visited the service. They were actually still dealing with matters after the closing hours which was quite cool to see. I didn't end up requiring anything after registration, but I'm certain that they'd have been most helpful with my issue."
"Restrictive. Although I took in most evidence, I left uninformed and more confused. One student than another entered the room after they saw my evidence. Why?"
"I am a volunter solicitor with this organisation. I, and about 30 others, give our time for free. The DCLC also employs 3 full time lawyers. All of them, and the volunteers, have extensive experience across differing fields of law."
"We use these folk regularly for our residents. Very help. Lovely to work with. Highly recommend"
