You can even bring your bike or dog along for the ride! Our informative commentary along the way adds an extra dimension to the journey. If you choose not to disembark on the other side, we call it the Mini Tour, which offers the most picturesque views of Otago Harbour, according to our skipper!
At Port to Port Cruises and Wildlife Tours, we proudly collaborate with Wildlife Pencil Artist Ferne Eagle. Ferne designs and draws local wildlife that we encounter on our trips, which we then print in color on various items such as T-Shirts, masks, hats, and more. These items can be made to order, and we also have some stock available onboard Sootychaser. Alternatively, you can order online, and we offer shipping both overseas and locally.
Wildlife is abundant at Taiaroa Head nature reserve throughout the year. We often see Subantarctic visitors, including different albatross species and Giant Petrels, during the winter season. Join Skipper Rachel on Sootychaser to see and learn about seals, albatross, and much more!

"Rachel did an awesome job being tour guide, boat captain and deck hand. There were binoculars for everyone, and we all had our life vests on during the journey. She was excellent at getting up close to the wildlife. We saw many types of sea birds, albatrosses, blue penguins, seals and sea lions, so much wildlife! The boat ride was fun! It was a sunny day and we really enjoyed the experience. I highly recommend this experience. There were three little boys on board and it was great to see their enthusiasm and interest in the wildlife. We were on a cruise with NCL. They were charging $169 per person for the same/similar experience. I am happy we booked directly with Rachel through Viator. It really is only a five minute, easy walk to the dock where Port to Port picks us up. It’s nice to support small businesses. My only complaint was that since we booked through Viator, for a few days it showed as “Pending” - pending tour operator review. I had to follow up with Viator, and they communicated with Port to Port. We did get confirmation, but only a few hours before the actual excursion. Another passenger said she had the same experience. Once confirmed we were great!"
"Couldn't get a more knowledgeable and enthusiastic skipper/tour guide than Rachel, so many different types of birds, seals, thoroughly enjoyable morning, BIG THANKS. Pip"
"Just got off the Wildlife Cruise, saw lots of different albatross, and seals. Rachel was really friendly and knowledgeable, she made feel very welcome. Would highly recommend this tour."
"I booked a "Treasure Hunt" trip for myself and three kids last weekend - we loved it! The trip included a short ferry ride from Port Chalmers out to Quarantine Island, a treasure map for each of the kids and then a small bag of "treasure" for each of them on our return trip back to Port Chalmers. The owner/operator Rachel was very friendly and shared some interesting commentary on the history of the region during our short trips on her boat. Highly recommended!"
