About the Business
Welcome to the Department of Conservation - Ōtepoti / Dunedin Visitor Centre, located in the beautiful city of Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. As an establishment, point of interest, and travel agency, we are dedicated to promoting and preserving the natural wonders of this region.
At our visitor centre, you will find a wealth of information on how to make the most of your visit to New Zealand and the Chatham Islands. Whether you are interested in fishing for whitebait or exploring the stunning landscapes, we have all the details you need. Discover the best fishing spots, learn about regulations, and find out when and where to catch whitebait.
We understand the challenges faced by the tourism industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That's why we are proud to announce that Southern Lakes Sanctuary has received Jobs for Nature funding in 2021. This funding allows us to employ staff for conservation work in the local area, supporting both the environment and the community.
In line with our commitment to conservation, the Government will be introducing 19 new protection areas in the Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana. These areas will help safeguard our precious natural resources for future generations.
For those interested in furthering their knowledge and contributing to conservation research, we offer postgraduate research scholarships in the natural and social sciences. Join us in making a difference and advancing our understanding of the natural world.
If you are passionate about protecting the environment and enjoy the thrill of hunting, consider participating in the National Wild Goat Hunting Competition. Compete for national and local prizes while helping to preserve the delicate balance of our ecosystems.
We also provide guidance on encounters with New Zealand fur seals. While it is generally best to leave them alone, there are exceptions. Learn how to navigate these situations and ensure the safety of both yourself and the seals.
Our latest special issue of the New Zealand Journal of Ecology focuses on frogs, shedding light on the challenges faced by these precious amphibians. We pay tribute to the late Emeritus Professor Phil Bishop, a champion for our native frogs, and raise awareness about their conservation needs.
In addition, we are proud to announce the successful completion of a complex restoration project at Denniston. The restoration involved fixing a collapsed section of 140-year-old stone retaining walls, preserving the historical heritage of the area.
Lastly, as we enter the whitebait season from 1 September to 30 October, we want to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. We provide important information to help you make the most of this season while respecting the environment and following regulations.
Visit the Department of Conservation - Ōtepoti / Dunedin Visitor Centre to learn more about these initiatives and discover the wonders of our natural world. Let us be your guide as you explore the stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife of Otago, Dunedin, and beyond.
