The Soundshell, along with its beautiful colonnaded surround, was constructed in 1935 in the aftermath of the devastating 1931 earthquake. Designed by renowned Napier architect J T Watson, the Colonnade and Soundshell were ambitious projects undertaken by the Thirty Thousand Club.
The Thirty-Thousand Club generously funded the construction of the Soundshell, dancing area, and colonnade. This Art Deco masterpiece was the first of its kind in New Zealand and symbolized Napier's determination to not only rebuild after the earthquake and fires but also reinvent itself in the process. The design of the Soundshell was inspired by Hollywood, not Brighton Beach, and it brought with it the Veronica Sun Bay, a colonnade, three grand arches (including the iconic 'New Napier Arch'), and an outdoor dancing area. The citizens of Napier contributed to the construction by 'purchasing' individual paving slabs. This transformation of Napier into a modern city of the future, a place for enjoyment and leisure, was well underway.
The stage area at Napier Soundshell is available free of charge for non-profit organizations. We also offer backstage access and power for a small fee. Amplified events are permitted for a maximum of five hours, as long as the noise level remains acceptable, and must conclude by 10pm.
Please note that the Soundshell Fees and Charges for the period from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024 have been approved. All fees and charges mentioned are inclusive of GST (unless otherwise stated).

"NYE 2023 at the soundshell with Automatic 80's. Great night and awesome venue. Fun, sounds and fireworks."
"Great spot for events for all the family to enjoy"
"The back of the soundshell is visible from the information center. We only noticed it because of the columns that were lining the edge of the shell and the plaza area. You then enter the area through arches. The soundshell is a large outdoor stage with a large plaza area for people to gather. There is also a little monument nearby towards the sea called the Veronica sunbay. There is also a little covered area with pillars as well. There is a garden area at the other end which heads towards the Napier War Memorial building. I thought it was a nice place to take pictures. We came by again on Saturday and they were screening Moana with food trucks in the plaza area. It was unfortunately raining."
"One of the interesting things to see along the Marina Parade is the historic Sound Shell, which was built after the famous earthquake in the early 1930s. Like much of Napier, this venue was designed in Art Deco style which was popular at the time. Today, you can see the this lovely Art Deco structure along the promenade and image what it would be like to hear a performance here. In addition to the period architecture, there are some gorgeous flower beds set-up on the east side of the Sound Shell grounds that are worth seeing in the spring time. For those who intend to spend time on the Marina Parade or walking around Napier to take in the many Art Deco buildings and structures, this will be one of the places you will want to include in your list of things to see/do in Napier. You can comfortably visit in just a few minutes. The Sound Shell is located just north of the Napier i-SITE building, just in front of the Marina Parade and Tennyson street junction. You can access the area from all sides."
"Stunning New Years Eve celebrations, great entertainment. Always a location that draws you back. Loads of history and Art Deco styled architecture in this whole location. Beautiful beach walks in both directions, stunning gardens that are beautifully maintained by our local council gardens. Nice safe location for an evening stroll, enjoy our beautiful Pania of the reef bronze statue, Tom Parker’s colourful fountain throughout the walkways .just across the winding pathways you will find our new pier. A must see location, just steps away from our local isite . Public restrooms also available."
