About the Business
Welcome to Abberley Park, a hidden gem located in Christchurch, New Zealand. Nestled in the suburb of St Albans, this establishment is not just your ordinary park - it is a true point of interest and a popular tourist attraction.
Originally a private garden, Abberley Park dates back to the 1860s, with some of its majestic trees still standing proudly today. This park is a haven for local residents, but its beauty and serenity are deserving of a wider appreciation. As you step foot into Abberley Park, you will be greeted by an enchanting collection of mature trees, a charming stream, and a delightful scented garden.
One of the main highlights of Abberley Park is the well-loved children's playground, which has been enjoyed by generations. With its block wall, multi-play structure, roundabout, see-saw, slides, and swings, children will have endless hours of fun and laughter. The park also features expansive lawns, meandering pathways along the stream, ample seating areas, and a charming fountain. During the warm summer days, visitors can even cool off in the fenced paddling pool.
If you're a dog owner, you'll be pleased to know that dogs are welcome in Abberley Park. However, they must be kept on a leash throughout most of the park. There is a designated area on the flat eastern lawn where dogs are allowed to be off-leash and under effective control. Just make sure to keep them away from the playground equipment and within one meter of it.
Abberley Park has a rich history that adds to its charm. The original homestead, built in the 1860s by Thomas James Maling, was named after his hometown in Worcestershire, England. Over the years, the property changed hands until it was acquired by the Council in 1939. The Council decided to transform it into a public park and playground while preserving its 19th-century character.
As you explore Abberley Park, you'll come across the remnants of the original homestead, including a pavilion and playhouse. The rose garden and many of the original trees and shrubs have also been preserved. The eastern lawn, once a horse paddock, was transformed into a sports ground and playground for children. A garden for the blind was designed by Huia Gilpin, the Director of the Botanic Gardens, in the 1950s, and remnants of this garden can still be seen as part of the Scented Garden today.
To learn more about the rich history of Abberley Park, you can read the entry in the District Plan or explore the digital version of the Official Souvenir Programme from 1940. Additionally, there are four bookable areas within the park - North Lawn, East Lawn, West Lawn, and the Scented Garden. If you're interested in booking any of these areas, please refer to the terms and conditions provided.
With its meandering pathways, Abberley Park is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing picnic. Take a moment to immerse yourself in the tranquility of this picturesque park and discover the best it has to offer by embarking on the Abberley Park Walk.

"Absolutely beautiful park. Two playgrounds located in separate areas of the park. Big slide, park benches, rose garden, toilets, dogs stick library and public toddlers pool. One of my favourite parks. Stunning flowers. Dogs on leash on all paths and 2 metres away from playgrounds. I also wish people would pick up their dog poo while off leash, but is a great park for dogs and families."
"Very beautiful and quiet park surrounded by lovely neighborhood. My kids love spending time on this park, especially during their off school hours. Overall, the park area is clean and save for children, especially the playgrounds. Toilet is available in the area."
"Abberly park I recently visited Abberly park and was blown away by its beauty and grandeur. is. Write a 220 word review about a park I recently visited Central Park in New York City and was blown away by its beauty and grandeur. Covering 843 acres in the heart of Manhattan, the park offers an oasis of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. It's easy to get lost in the many winding paths and hidden nooks that are tucked away throughout the park. One of the highlights of my visit was the Great Lawn, a vast expanse of grassy fields that are perfect for picnics, sunbathing, or just lounging with friends. The park also boasts numerous walking and biking paths, as well as several bodies of water, including the iconic Central Park Lake. In addition to its natural beauty, the park is also home to many cultural attractions, including the Central Park Zoo and the iconic Central Park Conservatory Garden. There are also many sculptures and monuments throughout the park that are worth exploring. Overall, Central Park is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to New York City. It's a beautiful and peaceful retreat that offers something for everyone, whether you're looking for a quiet spot to read a book or an exciting adventure exploring all the park has to offer."
"Gorgeous park with a rose garden, two main lawns, two playgrounds, a paddling pool, stream, and several trails. There's even a stick library for dogs! It's a pity some dog owners don't know how to control their dogs in the supposedly leashed part and ruin it for others, though."
"Lovely park, two separate playgrounds, great wee paddling pool open Nov - Apr, plus a community house available to hire for events. Nice shading and various spots and gardens for picnics where you don't feel like you're encroaching on everyone else's space, and a generally just a great vibe."
