Welcome to Michael Owen, a registered clinical psychologist in private practice located at Seventh Avenue, Tauranga, New Zealand. Our institution is dedicated to providing clinical supervision and ACC ISSC Sensitive Claims Supported Assessments, as well as other ACC assessments such as Work Related Mental Injury and Mental Injury Caused by Physical Injury.
Please note that we no longer accept referrals for individual therapy. However, we offer ongoing supervision for a range of professionals including psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, and social workers. The focus of supervision will be tailored to your professional goals and therapeutic orientation. Our fee for supervision is $175 per hour (incl. GST), unless otherwise negotiated. We also offer reduced fees for students, trainees, or interns.
In addition to supervision, we also provide one-off or time-limited consultation for cases that are complex, challenging, or may benefit from an alternative point of view. With over 35 years of experience as a psychotherapist and psychologist, you can trust in our expertise and knowledge.
Michael Owen is a registered clinical psychologist (90-1385) and a member of the New Zealand Psychological Society. From 1996 to 2009, he was a member of the New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists. After obtaining a BSc in Zoology, Michael worked with high-needs children and adolescents in intensive residential psychiatric treatment for six years before pursuing postgraduate training at the University of Toronto. He has been practicing in Tauranga since 1994, previously holding the position of Senior Clinical Psychologist at Tauranga Hospital.
Throughout his career, Michael has undertaken further training, continuing competence programs, and clinical supervision, always adhering to the NZ Psychological Society Code of Ethics. He has trained in various therapeutic modalities including psychoanalytic psychotherapy, psychodynamic group therapy, family therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). With a particular interest in Analytical (Jungian) Psychology and working with dreams, Michael has also studied at the C G Jung Institute in Zurich.
Michael's dedication to holistic healing extends beyond his professional practice. He has worked with indigenous healers, medicine people, sangomas, and elders in Canada, USA, Mexico, and South Africa. He has trained with renowned experts such as Stanislav Grof, Michael Harner, Jon Kabat-Zinn, and Sondra Ray, among others. His writings encompass a wide range of topics, including The Psychology of the Family, Assessment, Planning and Recording in Child and Family Services, and Systemic Task-Oriented Supervision. His recent works include Jung and the Native American Moon Cycles, The Maya Book of Life: Understanding the Xultun Tarot, The 27 Club: Why Age 27 Is Important, and All the Rough Beasts.
