Welcome to The Village Cinema - Community Picture Theatre in Tauranga, New Zealand! Our establishment is more than just a movie theater - we are a point of interest and a hub for community engagement. Our mission, or Kaupapa, is to create a safe and accessible space for cinematic events that promote the values of inclusivity, support, and respect within our community.
At The Village Cinema, we believe in building connections with various local communities, advocacy support groups, and organizations. We collaborate with neurodiverse, deaf and hard of hearing, disability services, multicultural and migrant groups, LGBTQI community, low/no income advocacy groups, mental health support groups, elderly care/dementia support services, family support services, tertiary institutes, independent filmmakers, and other organizations. Through these partnerships, we aim to foster a sense of belonging and empowerment for all individuals.
In the past year alone, The Village Community Cinema has successfully hosted over 98 events! These events have been incredibly diverse, reflecting the unique interests and perspectives of our community members. We take pride in working closely with organizations, individuals, and groups to ensure the smooth logistics of each event. However, please note that the films or themes depicted during these events do not necessarily represent the views of the Incubator Creative Hub team, board, or volunteers.
We are committed to upholding the principles of the NZ Human Rights Act 1993, and therefore, we do not support any activity that contravenes its sections. Our aim is to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
Located in the Historic Village at 159, 17th Avenue in Tauranga, The Village Cinema is nestled within a unique cultural and artistic hub. The Historic Village was once a museum site and now features clusters of historic buildings, some of which have been relocated from different parts of New Zealand. Alongside our cinema, you'll find six art galleries, designer boutiques, artisan shops, a vinyl/record store, a barber, dance studios, The Whipped Baker Café, a Whakairo Māori carving studio, a theater, sculpture trails, murals, craft workshops, ceramics and pottery studios, a restaurant, The Men's Shed, a photography studio, a plant nursery, upcycled clothing boutiques, and many community organizations.
