Welcome to the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand (MRINZ), Aotearoa New Zealand's leading independent medical research institute. Located in Wellington on Riddiford Street, our institution is dedicated to challenging dogma, increasing knowledge, and improving clinical practice and outcomes both locally and internationally.

At MRINZ, our research teams are committed to investigating significant public health problems and providing high-quality evidence to improve disease management and patient care. As an internationally recognized academic institution, we operate under a charitable trust, pursuing advancements in clinical practice and offering specialist training in medical research.

We are deeply committed to creating a more equitable society that celebrates Te Ao Māori and upholds Te Tiriti o Waitangi. To achieve this, we actively support tangata whenua led processes, incorporating Māori worldviews and values into our research. We prioritize Māori health workforce training, integrate tikanga into our organization's practices, and collaborate with partners across New Zealand and the world.

Our collaborative research addresses crucial global public health issues while nurturing the next generation of world health leaders at all levels of education. As an independent research institute and registered charity, we operate independently from government and industry pressures, ensuring the integrity of our research.

Annually, we publish an average of 52 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, contributing to significant global changes in medical practice. Our capability as an autonomous trial coordinating center allows us to conduct large-scale, multinational clinical trials in collaboration with research networks in intensive care, hospitals, general practice, and pharmacies.

In addition to conducting research, we offer higher degrees through practical real-world research, including PhDs, MDs (Medical Doctorates), Masters, and Diplomas. We have strong affiliations with Victoria University of Wellington, Otago University, Montepellier University in France, and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

With extensive experience in designing, coordinating, and contributing to international multi-center randomized controlled trials, we have the ability to analyze data and publish findings in high-impact peer-reviewed medical journals, ensuring rapid translation of research into clinical practice.

Based within the Wellington Regional Hospital, we have access to Phase II facilities, including a 14-bed inpatient Clinical Trials Unit. We have also established the Pharmacy Research Network (PRN), a network of pharmacies across New Zealand and New Zealand, and TIME GP, a network of General Practices in New Zealand, to facilitate large-scale research in the community.

To conduct state-of-the-art research, we utilize REDCap, harnessing the capability and reliability of online and mobile technologies. Our data management adheres to CDISC and MedDRA standards, and we are in the process of ECRIN accreditation.

Clinical trials form the cornerstone of our mission, providing the highest level of scientific evidence for clinical practice. Through our clinical trials, we advance knowledge, improve health and well-being in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally, and find better ways to prevent and treat diseases.
