AMC Towing Tank Newnham Drive, Newnham, Tasmania 7248
About the Business
Welcome to the AMC Towing Tank, located in Newnham, Australia. As the largest and only commercially operating facility of its kind in Australasia, our towing tank is an essential tool for naval architects and engineering professionals.
Within our controlled environment, we conduct physical model experiments to measure the resistance and motions of surface ships and submarines. These tests provide valuable predictions for full-scale powering and motions, helping to reduce fuel costs, limit environmental damage, and decrease seasickness incidence.
Our towing tank is utilized by students, research organizations, and industry professionals, offering hands-on experience and experimental modeling opportunities. With decades of experience in test and analysis techniques, we are well-equipped to handle both conventional craft tests and specialized experimentation with unusual configurations.
Using our state-of-the-art software controlled wave-maker, we can generate a wide variety of wave forms, including regular sinusoidal waves, standard irregular wave spectra, and user-defined wave sequences. After each test, our wave dampening devices quickly return the water to a calm state, eliminating long wait times between experiments.
To measure towing force, sway forces, yaw moments, thrust, and torque, we have a range of fit-for-purpose dynamometers. Additionally, our advanced Qualisys digital video motion capture system, consisting of up to 8 cameras, allows us to track all six degrees of freedom motions for multiple floating models.
For maneuvering forces, we utilize our horizontal planar motion mechanism (HPMM) or a static pitch mechanism. We also have dedicated test rigs to quantify the performance of horizontal-axis and vertical-axis turbines, propellers, and rotors, including tidal energy turbines.
To further enhance our capabilities, we employ laser diagnostic tools such as Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) to quantify water flow in and around objects. We even custom-make our own neutrally buoyant fluorescing particles for these experiments. Traditional methods like paint-streak or tuft observations are also available for flow analysis.
In addition to our technical expertise, AMC has been an active member of the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) since 1987. This affiliation allows us to resolve technical problems and provide valuable advice and information regarding full-scale performance to designers, builders, and operators of ships and marine installations.
At AMC, we pride ourselves on our highly professional and experienced model makers who excel in manufacturing experimental scale models. Our commitment to innovation and research has been recognized through awards such as the RINA award for research into catamaran ride comfort.
As an institute of the University of Tasmania, the Australian Maritime College is dedicated to providing high-quality education and research. We are CRICOS Provider Code: 00586B and RTO ID: 60131.
Come and explore the possibilities at AMC Towing Tank. Experience the cutting-edge technology and expertise that make us a leading institution in the field of naval architecture and engineering.
