About the Business
Welcome to Folk Federation Dances, located in the heart of New Town, Elizabeth Street, 462. Our establishment is a point of interest for those seeking the joy of dancing to wonderful music and connecting with friendly people. Whether you're a seasoned dancer or have no experience at all, our inclusive environment welcomes individuals of all ages and identities.
At Folk Federation Dances, we offer a diverse range of dance traditions that reflect the rich cultural tapestry of Australia. From energetic bush dances to lively Balkan dances, elegant regency dances to enchanting renaissance dances, and lively Irish ceilis to spirited Scottish ceilidhs, there is something for everyone to enjoy. We also explore contemporary and traditional Australian dances, as well as the vibrant styles of contra, Balfolk, Klezmer, Steampunk, and more.
Join us for our end-of-month dances, where we celebrate various dance traditions with four hours of live music performed by Tasmania's finest folk dance bands. Taking place on the last Saturday of each month from March to November (except Easter), these dances are held at St James Hall and promise an unforgettable evening of merriment. For more details, visit folktas.org/hobartdances.
If you're a fan of US contra dances or squares, our TasContra nights are perfect for you. Held on the first and third Mondays of each month from February to December (except Easter), these lively events feature hot tunes by Ross Smithard and Up Jumped Trouble. Occasionally, we switch things up with Balfolk dances, which are energetic and fun French dances accompanied by other talented bands. Learn more at folktas.org/tascontra.
For those seeking a unique and eclectic mix of dances from different traditions, our Danceoholics Unanimous nights are not to be missed. Taking place on the second Friday of each month from February to December (except Easter), these lively events feature a variety of dances set to fine and lively recorded music. Prepare for an evening of laughter and enjoyment. Find out more at folktas.org/danceoholics.
We are proud to host a series of special dances throughout the year, featuring talented bands and musicians. From the Masked Mediaeval and Renaissance Ball with Jounce Ensemble to the Buttongrass Ball with HOT String Band, and from the Celtic Ceili with Intergalactic Shamrock to the Bush Dance with the Tassie Devil's Own, these events showcase the diversity of dance traditions. Check our schedule for upcoming events.
In addition to our regular dance nights, we offer Monday Night Folk Dances, occurring on the first and third Monday of each month from February to December (except Easter). These nights feature a mix of US contra dances and Balfolk nights, providing a variety of dance experiences. See our schedule for specific dates.
We also acknowledge the traditional and cultural lands of the Palawa/Pakana people of Lutruwita (Tasmania), on which we make music and dance. Theirs is the oldest continuing musical culture on Earth, and we pay respect to their elders past and present. We are mindful of the impacts of invasion and colonization and recognize that their lands have never been ceded.
Come and join us at Folk Federation Dances for a night filled with laughter, music, and the joy of dancing. No partner or experience required β just an open mind and a willingness to have a great time.
