Welcome to Glen Derwent, an iconic heritage property nestled in the historic town of New Norfolk in Tasmania's Derwent Valley. Situated at 88 Hamilton Road, this charming institution encompasses a café, lodging, and a point of interest for visitors seeking a unique and memorable experience.
With a rich history dating back to 1808, Glen Derwent spans approximately 12 acres of its original 65-acre land grant. Once owned by a former First Fleet convict, this site holds immense historical significance. The centerpiece of the property is the main house, an exquisite two-storey Georgian farmhouse built in 1818, featuring a 1840s extension, Victorian verandah, and conservatory. Imposing sandstone outbuildings, including stables, a barn, a coach house, and a hop kiln from 1870, add to the property's charm and authenticity.
As you explore the grounds, you will discover a range of enchanting features. The tennis court, which also served as the local croquet lawn for many years, provides a glimpse into the pastimes of yesteryears. A meticulously maintained box-hedged red and white rose parterre garden, complete with a tranquil fountain, adds a touch of elegance to the landscape. A picturesque willow-lined duck pond and an apple and cherry orchard contribute to the idyllic setting. These lush surroundings are home to a variety of wildlife, including peafowl, Tasmanian native hens, chickens, ducks, and black-faced Suffolk sheep that graze on the green paddocks.

"Owners are very friendly and accommodating! Had one night (powered site) stay here and it was lovely. You get to see peacocks, ducks, chickens and Sheeps around. Quiet town, petrol station is nearby and there is a snack bar that serves good food as well."
"Wonderful 200 year old farmhouse surrounded by beautifully kept gardens. There are also several pheasants and ducks strutting their stuff and showing off their colourful tails. Scrumptious Devonshire teas with the best home made jam."
"Recently stayed here for my sister and brother in law's wedding. What a beautiful location and my kids loved the animals and were excited to see all the little lambs. The self contained cottages were perfect, they were clean and comfortable. Would happily stay here again. Thank you for making it such an easy, stress free experience for my family."
"What a lovely setting with friendly hosts and service. The Devonshire Tea included scones that were the lightest I think I've ever tasted. Lovely cottage to stay in and the other rooms are delightful. Take some time out and make the effort to drop by, well worth the visit!"
