In recent news, there have been changes regarding the remittances of general practitioners (GPs). The Chief Minister of the ACT announced that starting from September 1, 2023, GP remittances would be considered as pays and subject to payroll tax. Unfortunately, this means that East Canberra General Practice will exceed the payroll tax threshold for the ACT, resulting in the need to pay payroll tax.
Operating on small profit margins, we regretfully cannot absorb this new tax. As a result, we have no choice but to pass on the cost of this tax to our patients. Effective from September 1, 2023, a $2.00 payroll tax levy will be added to the cost of consultations for all our privately billed patients.
We understand the burden this additional cost may impose on the affordability of healthcare for our patients, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. If the ACT Government reverses its decision regarding the tax, we will cease implementing the payroll tax levy. In the meantime, we encourage you to voice your concerns by reaching out to your local MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) to raise awareness about this new tax on healthcare in the ACT.
