"If cigarettes were cheaper, I'd be happier. Then again, I'd be happier if I weren't smoking at all. But I am, like it was an Olympic event, so WHILE I am, I think it's important to give my cigarette millions to smaller proprietors/outlets. I do this for a few reasons outside of the obvious stranglehold that Coles & Woolworths have in the Australian grocery marketplace. Tobacconists are often a few cents cheaper than the two major grocery chains, which may not seem like a big deal when you're forking out over a buck per cig, but like everything, it adds up. Beyond price, you might think, how is a tobacconist any better than a Woolies kiosk, for example? If you smoke, you probably already know the answer. Not only will you be treated as a proper customer by a tobacconist, you will be served WAY more quickly. The staff behind the counters of Coles & Woolies nationwide are the absolute embodiment of poor service. They're almost magical in their consistency. By contrast, the guys at Cignall are always pleasant and patient. And patience can matter. If your cigarette purchases are based primarily on price, you're not brand loyal. And if you're not brand loyal, a tobacconist is essential, because the laws around packaging and display mean that the product is hidden from view. I've also recently discovered that some products at Cignall have a twofer discount. So it's definitely a better choice than going to the grocery store."
