Welcome to Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Academy, Melbourne's oldest and most respected Indian classical dance instruction center. Located in the vibrant suburb of Richmond, our academy offers in-depth instruction in Bharata Natyam and Odissi, two of the most revered classical dance forms of India.

Conveniently accessible by train and tram, Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Academy is dedicated to providing high-quality dance education for both children and adults. With additional locations in Glen Iris, South Morang, and Point Cook, we cater to students of all proficiency levels.

Led by the esteemed Dr. Chandrabhanu, our academy has been a beacon of excellence since its establishment in 1973. With a career spanning over 40 years as a professional dance artist, Dr. Chandrabhanu's creativity and pioneering work have earned him numerous accolades. He is not only an inspiring guru to his hundreds of dance disciples but also a visionary leader who has transformed the academy into a dynamic cultural and community center. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts, Dr. Chandrabhanu was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2006.

Assisting Dr. Chandrabhanu is the talented Ambika Docherty, Deputy Director of the Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Dance Academy. As an accomplished exponent of Bharatnatyam and Odissi, Ambika oversees the junior classes and ensures the production design and costumes for all performances and productions are of the highest quality.

Adding to our team of esteemed instructors is Krushna Chandra Ray, a master of Odissi Classical and Hindustani Classical music. With a Masters Degree from Chandigarh University, Krushna is widely recognized as one of the best vocalists in Orissa, India. His expertise and passion for music enhance the learning experience for our students.

We are also proud to mention the creative partnership between Chandrabhanu and Geoffrey, during their time with the Bharatam Dance Company. Geoffrey's stunningly bold and vibrant sets and costumes perfectly complemented Chandrabhanu's extraordinary artistic vision. Together, they explored the depths of Asian history, culture, arts, philosophy, and spirituality. Under their remarkable artistic direction, the Bharatam Dance Company and the Bharatalaya Academy achieved new heights of success, firmly establishing themselves among the finest institutions in Australian performing arts.
