About the Business
Welcome to Mostly Unsung Military History Research & Publications! Located at Woodside Avenue in Frankston South, Australia, our institution specializes in uncovering the untold stories of Australian servicemen and women.
With over 24 years of experience in the Australian Regular Army, our founder Neil Smith is well-versed in military jargon, abbreviations, and the organizational systems of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He has extensively studied military archives to extract valuable information from personal, service, and operational records, enabling him to conduct in-depth research on individuals and groups of Australian servicemen and women.
Neil's expertise has been recognized through his nomination for the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance Medal. He is renowned for his historical articles, ANZAC Day pieces, and parade commentary on ABC TV and radio in Victoria. He has also worked as a cruise ship presenter and served as a compere for Reserve Forces Day. Recently, Neil has contributed to Unlock The Past's series of military historical research guide booklets, covering the British Garrison in Australia to the present day. His articles have been published in prestigious magazines such as Les Soins by Sorbonne University and Inside History.
One of Neil's ongoing projects is a book on Britons, including Australians, who fought in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. He has identified a significant number of Australians involved in this conflict, shedding new light on their contributions.
At Mostly Unsung, we offer presentations that delve into Australian military history, providing valuable guidance on accessing information from sources across Australia and the United Kingdom. Our professional research service goes beyond the standard details found in commonly available military and civil records, unearthing biographical and service data in greater depth.
Our research covers various aspects of Australian military history, including honours and awards, Eureka Stockade records, comprehensive information on Australians in the Boer War, munitions factories, Army and RAAF unit movements, non-fatal Australian casualties in Vietnam, internees, facilities, conscription in Australia, war crimes, and the Merchant Marine. These diverse areas of focus highlight the extensive research and resources available at Mostly Unsung.
Neil also conducts presentations on related research and historical topics. His recent engagements include a Q&A session with former State Premier Ted Baillieu, a luncheon speaker at the State Parliament House dining room, and a speaker at the Queen's Scouts Commemoration dinner with the Honourable David Baden-Powell. He has also provided sessions and served as an MC for local councils and other organizations throughout Victoria and New South Wales.
