"I went to heatherton from prep to year 3 (2012 to 2015) and did not have a good experience at all. Now I do understand this was a while ago and I hope the school has changed along with some teachers. In prep I really struggled with catching up with my peers academically, but it was pushed aside as "dumb". I had my work thrown away and I was constantly asked to restart, that really had an impact on my schooling life. I only learnt to read at a prep level in year 2, by an incredible teacher who is now retired. But in year three I was diagnosed with dyslexia and there was such resistance to helping kids with dyslexia as they didn't have the appropriate resources or teaching. We then had a choice to make. We could either stay at Heatherton or leave. I'm so glad we chose to leave. I've grown so much in my other primary school and now in my high school. I now achieve academic awards and have leadership roles. All I'm saying is that Heatherton may be perfect for your "main stream" kid but don't let your kid with a 'disability' settle for dumb, and unfortunately that's what heatherton wanted for me. Either way I still believe this school has good values, and I hope to see a bright future for the dyslexic support within the school."
